Note that the term 'host family' does not necessarily mean a married couple with children but could be a retired couple renting out their adult child's vacant room, single retirees, or young artists.

French outlets deliver 220 Volts (compared to 110 Volts in the US).
Laptop and other electronics are most often compatible with both voltages (check your devices) and will only require a socket adaptor.
Other appliances generally are not compatible with 220V. This includes grooming tools such as hairdryer, hair straightener, curling irons, electric razors etc.. You will need a voltage converter or you run the risk of damaging your equipment or even starting a fire. It is recommended to buy these items locally.
You are living in and sharing someone's home. It is important to respect and make an effort to adapt to the practices, rhythms and habits of the host family.
