Chinese Language Teachers as Cultural Ambassadors

a presentation at the National Chinese Language Conference, June 2020

Frank Tang & Robin Harvey

Chinese language teachers are cultural ambassadors as well as language instructors. A humanistic approach to teaching means recognizing the humanity of our students, their families and their communities.

In this era of upheaval, the teacher-student relationship becomes more important than ever. Understanding our students and each other supports the learning experience. The presenters shared their thoughts about how teachers can open their minds and hearts to their students, learning from them as we teach them. This requires a focus on perspectives as well as products and practices, in both the "target" culture and the cultures of our students, locales, the country and the world. It also requires us to know our students.

A range of innovative authentic materials and visuals for teaching culture, including news stories, photos, art, and videos, were shared and can be found in the presentation below. The incorporation of 1) cultural practices, products, and perspectives, (2) traditional and modern Chinese culture, (3) high and pop culture, and (4) Chinese culture and American/world cultures is discussed.
