Visiting Scholars

Arts and Science Visiting Scholars Policy

We welcome applications for Visiting Scholars with research interests that align with the scholarship and intellectual pursuits of the sponsoring department. Please provide a detailed proposal of the relevant project, goals and specific NYU resources necessary to conduct applicable research. Visiting Scholar affiliation with Arts and Science is a courtesy designation granted at the discretion of the Dean, subject to approval by the Provost, for a period of up to 12 months. Visiting Scholars are not employees of NYU and under no circumstances shall they be considered as such. Affiliation may be extended for one additional year pending review of an updated research proposal, provided the arrangement remains of mutual benefit to the Visiting Scholar and the sponsoring department. Requests for further extension should be considered exceptional and must be accompanied by compelling justification for waiving the standard limitations of affiliation, as well as an explanation of why research was not completed during the specified period.

Due to the large number of requests received, applications will be evaluated based on proposed research as well as stated expressions of interest summarizing the value of collaboration with the faculty sponsor and participation in the intellectual community of the department.  Visiting Scholars will be asked to certify their status at their home institution during their visit to NYU, and to acknowledge compliance with all relevant NYU policies.  Please prepare the following documents, Visiting Scholar Application, Applicant Certification, CV, and 1-2 page research proposal from the prospective Visiting Scholar and contact the FAS Office of Academic Appointments at fas.academic.hr@nyu.edu. The sponsoring faculty member must be in residence for the duration of Visiting Scholar affiliation.

Please note: Due to the University’s COVID-related policy, processing time may take longer than expected.  To ensure that the Visiting Scholar is approved and cleared from the COVID-related protocols in a timely manner, please submit the required documents 2-4 weeks prior to their start date.

As guests of the University Visiting Scholars can avail themselves of NYU Library privileges. Office space, shared or otherwise, is not provided.  Common areas should not be used outside regular business hours.  Where applicable, all necessary safety and related training must be completed for research conducted in NYU laboratory facilities.  ID cards must be collected at the conclusion of affiliation and returned to the NYU Card Center; please email fas.academic.hr@nyu.edu to confirm completion.
