By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
Describe strategies for incorporating embellishing tones in melodic improvisation.
Improvise melodies that incorporate passing tones, neighbor tones, and appoggiaturas over chord schemata introduced in Unit 3 and further proficiency with melodies in other simple time signatures.
Transcribe the chords and melody for a song selection that incorporates embellishing tones with a step, and label those tones by type as a passing tone (P), neighbor tone (N), appoggiatura (A), or escape tone (E).
Demonstrate further proficiency in sight reading, improvising, and transcribing rhythms that incorporate beat note values other than quarter notes in simple time (e.g. 2/2, 4/16, 3/8)

Improvisiation Exercise: Work through the exercises from the reading.
Melodic Improvisation (Embellishing Tones): Improvise a melody using one of the schema and backing tracks introduced in Unit 3. Add in passing tones, neighbor tones, and appoggiaturas into your improvisation. Before you begin, review the different types of embellishing tones and discuss strategies for incorporating them into your improvisation.
Sight-Singing (Skips in IV and V): Continue practice sight reading melodies in the section "Other Time Signatures" on both pages.
Rhythm Sight-Reading (Cut Time): Continue sight-reading rhythms in all sections.
Rhythm Sight-Reading (Other Beat Units): Continue sight-reading rhythms in the sections on "Simple Meters."
Theory Anthology: Listen to melodies in the sections "Passing & Neighbor Tones" and "Embellishing Tones with Leaps." Transcribe the chords (using Roman numerals and chord symbols), melody, and label all non-chord tones by type as a passing tone (P), neighbor tone (N), appoggiatura (A), or escape tone (E).
