By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
Demonstrate further proficiency in sight reading, improvising, and transcribing rhythms that incorporate beat note values other than quarter notes in simple time (e.g. 2/2, 4/16, 3/8)
Demonstrate further proficiency in improvising melodies over chord schemata introduced in Unit 3 and with melodies in other simple time signatures.
Aurally identify the form of a song as strophic or AABA and diagram the form, labeling sections using uppercase letters (e.g. A, A', B) and identifying phrase relationships using lowercase letters (e. g. a, a', b).
Read the following selections from Chenette's Foundations of Aural Skills:
Improvising Phrase Structure: Continue practice improvising phrase structure from Unit 4-1.
Sight-Singing (Skips in IV and V): Continue practice sight reading melodies in the section "Other Time Signatures" on both pages.
Rhythm Sight-Reading (Cut Time): Sight-read rhythms in all sections.
Rhythm Sight-Reading (Other Beat Units): Sight-read rhythms in the sections on "Simple Meters."
Theory Anthology: Listen to examples in the section "Simple Verse (Strophic) Form & 32-Bar AABA Form" and identify the type of form used. Diagram the form, labeling large sections with uppercase letters (e.g. A, A', B) and phrase relationships using lowercase letters (e. g. a, a', b) as introduced in Theory II. You may find it helpful to work in BriFormer to complete your aural analyses. (See "Getting Set Up" for instructions on how to use BriFormer.)
Form ID & Transcription in Radiohead: Listen to Radiohead's song "Exit Music (For a Film)." Identify and diagram the overall form. Also, listen for schemata from Unit 3 and chords introduced in Unit 2.
Instructor Note: See the notes and score on the Instructor Companion Site.
Stophic or AABA? Listen to songs on Michael Berry's Youtube playlist and ID each song as strophic or AABA.
