Homework Help

WHY MUST I DO HOMEWORK?

The professional staff at Northwestern believes that homework reinforces learning. It's that simple!  At the high school level homework is often graded. These points can be an asset for improving a grade. "Forgetting" or choosing not to complete an assignment can have negative consequences.  Partially completed assignments will also reduce grades.  Keep in mind that the more you practice the better you get at a particular task. Chances are good that this will reduce the time needed to re-learn or cram for the final exam.

ACCESSING HOMEWORK DURING AN ILLNESS

Most teachers post homework assignments on their individual webpages.  Start there!  It's always handy to have the phone number of a friend from each class. This provides the opportunity for easy communication about specific assignments if questions arise. If absent for 3 or more days, please call Mrs. Mikruk in the Counseling Office (610-298-8661 ext. 2247) by 9:00 AM. She will collect homework assignments for any student and have them available in the attendance office for pick up before 3:00 pm of that day.

HOMEWORK TIPS

1.  Remember that most teachers post homework assignments and their course syllabus on their personal website. Search using the teachers last name followed by the first initial.

2.  Provide a good work space that is quiet, uncluttered and "sets the tone" for productive time.

3.  Respect the need for different timelines. Some students need a break when they return home from school, others want to get any outstanding work or study completed immediately. While schedules vary from day to day, it is a good idea to prioritize school work completion at a similar time each day to avoid forgetting or running out of time.

4.  Create a method of organization that keeps due dates clear and remembered.

5.  Foster independence. Parental help is beneficial when getting started, but school work should become progressively more the responsibility of the student.
