Laboratory Expectations

Students are expected to behave safely and appropriately at all times in their laboratory environments. This includes, but is not limited to, science classrooms, technology/engineering facilities, and visual arts rooms. Appropriate behavior will follow the written guidelines provided by the teacher and signed by both the student and parent. In addition, students are expected to follow all additional verbal and/or written safety procedures provided by their teachers. Misbehavior of any type will not be tolerated. In addition, students are not permitted to have food or drink during an active lab experience/project and are not permitted to wear open-toed shoes while investigations and/or hands-on projects with tools and/or equipment are taking place.

Policy for non-compliance:

1st Offense:

Verbal reprimand from the teacher, written record of the violation maintained by the teacher after reviewing the safety rules with the student. If this is a serious violation, which may have caused harm to human health or the environment, the student will be removed from laboratory work immediately and sent to the appropriate grade-level administrator. The teacher will deliver a disciplinary referral to the appropriate grade-level administrator at their earliest opportunity, but only after the parent and supervisor has been called and notified about the infraction. Written notification about the consequence for the student will also be sent to the parents or guardians in cases where action taken through discipline exceeds an official warning. The student will be provided with an alternative assignment for that laboratory exercise and may not return to participate in that activity.

2nd Offense:

The student will be removed from laboratory work immediately and sent to the appropriate grade-level administrator. The teacher will deliver a disciplinary referral to the appropriate grade-level administrator at their earliest opportunity, but only after the parent and supervisor has been called and notified about the infraction. Written notification about the consequences for the student will also be sent to the parents or guardians in cases where action taken through discipline exceeds an official warning. The student will be provided with an alternative assignment for that laboratory exercise and may not return to participate in that activity.

3rd Offense:

The student will be removed from laboratory work immediately and sent to the appropriate grade-level administrator. The teacher will deliver a disciplinary referral to the appropriate grade-level administrator at their earliest opportunity, but only after the parent and supervisor has been called and notified about the infraction. The student will be provided with an alternative assignment for that laboratory exercise and may not return to participate in that activity. Written notification will also be sent to the parents or guardians, along with a conversation between the parent, teacher, and administrators (supervisor and assistant principal). Depending on the result of that conversation, the student may be removed from laboratory operations for a specified amount of time, up to the remainder of the school year. If this occurs, the student will be assigned an alternative work assignment(s) to be provided in a supervised setting as determined by the administration.
