This assignment was easy but it took me a while to figure out what type of photos would be best without color. I used photos from other assignments and edited them within the Photos app to adjust the levels of light and color. It was very interesting to see how the focal point and details of a picture can drastically change without color.
The original image had a lot of color and variety. The coyote falls directly on the left vertical line of the rule of thirds but the green plants on the right side of the picture are distracting.
However, when the photo is transformed into monochrome, the coyote statue becomes a more important focal point. The details in the statue are more defined and the plants are less distracting. There is a greater emphasis on the left side of the image and the writing on the plaque is clearer. The image becomes much more interesting when I removed distractions and created a stronger focal point.
The original photo had a contrast between the yellow background and the gray center of the picture. There was an emphasis on the writing on the structure but the yellow background and the red corners were distracting.
However, when the photo is transformed into monochrome, the words on the structure become clearer. There are more defined details throughout the image and the distracting elements are completely removed, allowing for greater emphasis on the focal point. The new picture has more balances and feels complete without any distractions.
The original picture was very bright and colorful. The aperture blurred the background, creating a strong focal point on the leaf. However, the rock on the right side of the photo contrasts all of the other elements of the picture and can be distracting.
On the other hand, when the photo is transformed into monochrome, the details on the plant become more apparent. The rock is no longer distracting and the focal point is emphasized greater. This image successfully shows the importance and impact that monochrome can have on a photo.
