The global rights issue that that I feel compelled to learn about is the issue of homelessness. I have been passionate about this issue for a long time, ever since I was young. While living in Worcester as a kid I would constantly notice homeless men and women on the street, wondering why nobody was helping them. Finally when I was about 10 years old, I felt compelled to take action, and raise some money for these homeless men and women.
At the same point in time my church, St. Rose of Lima gave us a challenge. We were given $10 and challenged to turn this into something bigger, so I thought what better way to spend the $10 than to raise money for the homeless. With a little bit of networking I was able to secure (for free) one Boston Red Sox, and one Boston Celtics ticket. With these I was able to create a raffle, to raise money for the homeless. With all of the generous donations I was able to raise over $1,700 to donate to Veterans Inc. in Worcester, MA.
The reason that I decided to choose Veterans Inc. out of all of the many wonderful charities is due to many reasons. One is that these veterans sacrificed their lives for us, so the very least we can do for them is to give back. Another reason is because they are local, but they are also a large organization with many locations, which gives them the ability to help these homeless veterans all over the world. Finally, Veterans Inc. is a trusted charitable organization, which makes me feel comfortable donating to, because I know they will make smart decisions with the money that I have raised, and make the best purchases for the veterans.
