RJ Scaringe started a small car business in 2009, when the car business was not too hot. However, RJ knew that it would take time to make the brand that he desired, and was ready to take on this challenge. From the start of the podcast RJ had talked about the influence that his dad had on him since he was an optimist. From the early age of 7-8 RJ had business cards for his 'Metal Polishing' business, which he operated from such a young age. This shows the passion that RJ has for being an engineer. The start that RJ Scaringe had on becoming an engineer was thanks for a close neighbor, who was an engineer. He would observe and learn from this neighbor through the entirety of his childhood. What are 3 takeaways you have from this podcast?
RJ Scaringe graduated RPI (New York) as the #1 in his class, and with a perfect class, which gave him the opportunity to study for his graduate degree at MIT. Through the connections he made at MIT's car programs he was able to learn all of the challenges and techniques for his car company. When he was ready to start his car company, the question that they were trying to solve was, "What transportation system will work in 100 years, and stop causing major problems in society?" This is when he came up with the idea for Rivian, the electric truck company. The Rivian truck is powered completely carbon-free, which allows for no negative emissions going into the environment, and allows the truck to be powered completely by electricity, so there is no need for gasoline.
For the most part RJ Scaringe kept his company to himself, but he importantly told one person in his college who ended up being his partner. The day after they graduated they started this company called "Mainstream Motors" which then transitioned to "Avera" which then traditioned to "Rivian". They spread the company through a software company, and got lucky with investors and got the company started. The main takeaway that I absorb from all of this information is that RJ Scaringe found a problem and solved it. He was very innovative in solving this problem, and creating one of the biggest electric vehicle brands today, known as Rivian!
