As the President of the Freshman class, I feel a responsibility respond to today’s incident that occurred during 6th period lunch. Although I was right there as it happened, I will not name anyone involved or get into specifics. That is because this statement is not about this specific incident. I will reiterate that fighting is unacceptable and unwise.
As you know, laying hands on other students or anyone else under any circumstance is against the rules laid out in the handbook. NP has a zero tolerance policy for fights. I personally do not believe physical altercation is a justifiable way of solving problems. Not to mention, injuries do not only affect those participating in the skirmish, but innocent bystanders too. I would know, somebody tried to grab my shirt to regain balance in today’s scuffle.
There are a plethora of means to go about solving problems. I am not sure what exactly led to this struggle, but I’m sure it could have been respectfully talked out between them. This is not meant to single out those involved in this particular incident. Fighting is a leading cause of discipline at NP, and there is no reason for that to be the case.
I do want to praise our lunch monitors and administration for their quick thinking that broke up this fight as fast as it started. That said, the subsequent cheering, whether it was egging on the fight or praising administration’s actions, was unnecessary and disrespectful.
That all said, I want to end by thanking everyone in the freshman class for their efforts in making the transition into high school seamless. Hopefully this is the last fight in our school this year, and it should definitely be the last that freshman are involved in.
