The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison details the story of Pecola Breedlove, an African American girl facing the obstacles of racism and discrimination against African Americans. Morrison structures the novel into seasons throughout the book and describes how Pecola has dealt with oppression, beauty standards, poverty, racism, etc. These experiences led her to become brainwashed, causing her to desire the white beauty standard, blue eyes.
I could work with other students on how the music of blues is seen throughout the Bluest Eye. Through the use of examples and profound evidence to support our claim that blues was used in the Bluest Eye, we had the ability to connect two hard themes together, with is the reason why I chose this artifact,
This is one of many essays that I conducted where I could implicate my understanding of the novel to real-life events in the world, which is why I chose this artifact. My argument conveyed a deeper understanding of the text, "The fault for all these absences is the society Pecola grew up in; her being an African American girl is enough to argue that her physique is stopping her from excelling in life; everyone must follow social standards, or they'll fall into nothingness."
I chose this artifact to demonstrate my ability to connect beauty and race to The Bluest Eye. Pecola wants this image, knowing it is impossible; she knows in her head that her skin color is holding her back. Ideal beauty standards are an essential topic in Pecola. I chose this artifact because I could interpret two critical themes in the novel and use profound evidence to support my claim.
The art of music is applied throughout The Bluest Eye to anticipate the audience what is to happen next and is seen as providing a pleasant coping mechanism for the oppressed African American community. My argument for my panel discussion where I had the ability to interpret the deepness of music in The Bluest Eye and correlate that to the real world, which is the reason why I chose this artifact.
This refection statement that addresses beauty standards conveys my idea of beauty in my reality; with the use of the novel, I created a connection with the main protagonist Pecola and included how I resonate with her, with the ideology of how men are supposed to act in society. The reason why I chose this essay was due to its correlation to me personally, where I had the ability to give my own personal experience and relate to the character of Pecola.
