The thick aroma of motor oil and sweat has circulated in my blood since the day I came into this world. Born and raised in a small mechanic shop in Newark, the heavens placed me with parents who fled a Civil War and sacrificed everything to obtain the American Dream. An infertile mother's wish came true and named the child a gift from God: Mathew. They agreed that this child would have a better life than they did, no matter what life throws them.
Now, after 17 years, I have carried the burden as a first-generation student to strive for the best to take all the opportunities available and give it my everything, something my parents never had. As obstacles arise daily and challenges become more brutal, I guarantee I will continue to walk further until my dreams are accomplished. Nothing is going to stop me; I am proud of my roots, proud of who I am, and proud of my road in life. I am Mathew Hernandez.
My most significant high school achievement was becoming a National College Match Finalist. All my efforts have led to the moment of getting into my dream college.
The ability to continue to strive for greatness, giving up is never on my agenda. Throughout high school, I have learned to always look forward, even when everything is being thrown at you.
I strive to see the day when I get accepted into Yale University and be able to major in Global Affairs and minor in Political Science.
My achievement in writing is that I was able to write an engagement activity in Global Politics, which caused me to earn a grade of 6 in the IB. In addition, a minor achievement this senior year was writing a personal statement that I am proud of.
Throughout my high school career, I am constantly growing and changed as a person and writer. A strength I have seen as a student is the ability never to give up. In writing, no matter what grade I receive, I know I am not done perfecting myself; my writing is growing like I am.
I strive to achieve a great score on my English HL Essay; in addition, I hope to use all the tools I've learned in IB in the future. I hope that I will continue to progress in my writing.
