1984 by George Orwell is a novel that details a totalitarian society in which Big Brother controls and brainwashes the citizens of Oceania. Winston, the novel's main character, seeks to go against society and wants to figure out the truth. Throughout the book, it details the journey of Winston's curiosity, but at the end gets captured and severely brainwashed to the point that he believes 2 + 2 = 5.
The Children's Book, created by other students and me, was to demonstrate how manipulation is dealt with in the totalitarian society of 1984. We used several amounts of diction, rhetorical devices, figurative language, rhyme scenes, etc. We tried to convey what manipulation is like for the youth of Oceania and brought it to real life. I mainly chose this artifact to demonstrate a correlation between the arts and 1984, in addition to the uniqueness of each page of the Children's Book.
The slide presentation of 1984 that dealt with chapters 5 and 6 demonstrates a deeper analysis of the characters in the novel. Working with other students, we could detail conflict in these chapters using quotes to convey concrete evidence. In addition, we found literary devices in these chapters that capture the more profound acknowledgment of plots and characters. I chose this slide because it conveys the growth of us students in IB and how we can introduce unique interpretation and justify it with evidence; it illustrates our deep analysis skills.
The Manipulation of Big Brother, an essay that I conducted relating to the totalitarian regime of 1984, implicates various types of manipulation that radically altered the nature of the human species, splitting into the collaboration of genres of branches used tactically to dehumanize the citizens of Oceania to increase the benefits of society's norms. The reason why I chose this artifact was to demonstrate my growth in writing, it can have little change, but it demonstrates how much I have grown while being in IB.
