Natural Tie Dye

Natural dyes are derived from plants, minerals or invertebrates. Most natural dyes we use at Forest School are from plant sources such as roots, berries, bark, wood and leaves. Dyeing with natural dyes is very similar now to how it was thousands of years ago.

At Forest School the children can use foraged fruits to tie dye calico squares. Blackberries are used to produce a blue or purple colour, raspberries can be used for pink and red and coffee or tea can be used to produce tan or brown. We then use string, wool or elastic bands to bind the fabric and try some tie-dyeing techniques to produce different patterns.
