Using Rates

The key idea is that a ratio compares two amounts of the same kind of thing (eg. people (50): girls(30) to boys(20)....or a 3:2 ratio).

A rate is a special kind of ratio that compares different kinds of measures such as dollars per kilogram ($/kg) or kilometers per hour (kph).
