On this page you can find information and resources to support you with competiting in a variety of Maths competitions across the year. Check out the information below and learn a little bit more about each one. If you have any questions, feel free to talk to Mr Davis (dvs@northcote.school.nz).
Special Note for Year 11s: The Prize in Year 11 Mathematics - the Tony Smith Cup - is awarded to the top performing student in class assessments AND competitions. Talk to your Maths teacher or Mr Bradly if you have any questions about this.
Who: Year 9 to 11 students
When: Part 1 -Tuesday 24th March 2026
Part 2 - Wednesday May 6th 2026
Registration deadline: Friday 20th March
Cost: $6.00
This year the competition (initialled as UOJMC) will be held in two parts - the first being a multiple-choice exam, while the second part will be a long answer exam limited to a selection of the top performers in the first part. Both parts are paper based.
The first part of the competition will be sat from Monday March 23 to Friday March 27, while the second part will be held on Wednesday May 6.
Each part of the competition lasts for 50 minutes per part (so one hour, 40 minutes in total across the two parts). The emphasis is on problem solving, so expect surprises!
Mathematical skills are important, but so is careful reading. Students who read the questions carefully and work out exactly what is being asked generally do better than those who jump in and write down the first thing that springs to mind.

The Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) competition gives students the opportunity to develop their problem-solving skills through algorithmic thinking. The competition incorporates unique ‘three-stage tasks’ that encourage students to develop informal algorithms and apply them to test data of increasing size or complexity.
CAT is suitable for any maths class and requires no programming experience. It can be used to develop students’ interest and potential in computer programming.
Like all our competitions, the CAT contains unique problems designed each year by leading educators, academics and industry experts to challenge and extend your students’ problem-solving skills.
