SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear NAPS Community,

Welcome back to a new school year! It's been a challenging opening with oppressive heat during the first full week and then a freak storm at the end of the week that knocked out electricity and flooded basements throughout the Town. How serendipitous it was to have early dismissal before the storm hit. I wish I could say I knew it was coming, but actually, it was pure luck!  But with the gas explosion and the COVID-19 pandemic happening during my tenure as Superintendent, I have come to expect the unexpected! Through it all, our teaching and support staff have shown professionalism and dedication to our students.

Our custodians, DPW, Police, Fire, School, and Town officials worked around the

clock to get our Town functioning again for North Andover's residents. I especially want to thank our Food Services Director, Erika Murphy, and her staff for providing grab-and-go lunches for our families and Terry Holland, owner of Stachey's, who provided lunch for those taking shelter at North Andover's Senior Center on Sunday, September 10. Lastly, I would like to thank our students and parents for your patience, resilience, and commitment to our school Community. Together, we can overcome any challenge that comes our way!

DID YOU KNOW?  North Andover's Parent Liaisons

For those new to North Andover, we want you to know that our two parent liaisons are here to serve as a bridge between parents and the school, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.

Maria Brito-Ferullo is originally from Chile and is based at the Atkinson School. Victoria Torres is from Peru and is based at the Middle School. Both are bilingual and are available to support our Spanish and Portuguese families and all English and non-English-speaking families throughout the school district. Both Maria and Victoria bring a wealth of experience in working with parents and deeply understand the challenges and concerns parents may face. Their role will be to support parents in

navigating the school system, connecting parents with resources and information, facilitating parent involvement in school activities, coordinating parent workshops and events, and promoting a positive and welcoming school environment for all families.

Maria and Victoria will be available to assist parents with any questions or concerns regarding their child's education, school policies, or general information about the school. Their contact information is listed below:

SEL NEWS by Michelle O'Leary

North Andover’s Department of Social and Emotional Learning has worked hard these last few weeks helping our students transition to a new school year. Our counselors are renewing relationships with their students that have been building for years, while others are just getting to know each other.

We should all take time to let the comfort level develop in our children’s new grade, new classes, or new school. Please get in touch with the support staff at your school if you need any assistance with the transition. If your child starts his or her day with worries, try utilizing a quick meditation like Rise & Shine: 5 Minute Gratitude and Positive Affirmations

Make this part of your daily routine; these 5 minutes may save you many minutes of morning stress.

Community events are coming up to assist parents in their children's social and emotional development. The North Andover Parents Resource Network Program on Managing Stress will take place on Thursday, September 28, and is described above.

I will again start my monthly Parent Office Hours in the Community Room of Stevens Memorial Library this year. I will be there on October 12, November 9, and December 14 from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Come by to talk about all things SEL. Hope to see you there!

The Community Falls in Love with NAPD's Newest Member!

If you've met Officer Scarlett, you've no doubt fallen in love with the Town's newest "comfort officer." Officer Scarlett joined the North Andover Police Department on September 7 and works with her handler, Officer Mark Wilson, as well as Community Support Coordinator Deanna Lima and Community Support Case Manager Crystal Clunie.  Officer Scarlett has begun her duties, visiting schools, the Senior Center, Group Homes, and the Community Center, stealing hearts and spreading joy wherever she goes!

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND ENDEAVORS

The Calculus Project by Benjamin Cabrera

This summer, North Andover Public Schools enhanced their partnership with The Calculus Project (TCP) to offer rising 8th graders an opportunity to learn algebra and participate in project-based science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) activities on the campus of UMass Lowell. Over a three-week intensive program, students had the opportunity to get a head start on the upcoming year's math curriculum, embark on STEM-focused field trips, and cultivate relationships with peers from various schools participating in the program. I am the site coordinator for the TCP summer initiative, and I also oversee the year-round partnership between North Andover and The Calculus Project.

The Calculus Project is a grassroots-style initiative aimed at dramatically increasing the number of students of color and students from low-income backgrounds who complete Advanced Placement Calculus in high school. Its mission is rooted in the belief that if students who are furthest from opportunity have the skills and resources to access advanced mathematics it will decrease their need to take remedial mathematics courses upon entering college. This, in turn, will increase the likelihood of their graduating from college, open doors to STEM professions that would otherwise be hard to enter, and positively impact their future earnings.

DISTRICT SPOTLIGHT

Franklin School Highlights by Joe Clarke, Principal

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL, DRAGONS!

Franklin is honored to be the first school highlighted in Dr. Gilligan’s Knightly Newsletter. Now that we finally have a full week of school behind us, we are back into the swing of things! Our students and staff at the Franklin School pride ourselves on the community we have built, not only within the school walls but outside in the larger community, and we’re excited for the opportunity to get back to that!

That feat is accomplished by our students, who have worked hard at consistently exhibiting their RAISE values with peers and adults while focusing on their personal goals. The Franklin staff works tirelessly to maintain high expectations and to assist ALL students in reaching their goals. This year, we are pleased to welcome a few new staff members, including 2nd-grade teacher Ms. Kennedy Quirk, special education teacher Mrs. Andrea Cote, PE Teacher Mrs. Danielle Maguire (she came over to us last November, but I thought she still deserved a shout-out!), and many other staff members around the building. It has been wonderful to hear the school ringing with excitement and RAISE again - and it hasn’t stopped since day 1! As we close out the first month of the school year, I look forward to all I know we will accomplish together and am inspired by what I have already seen. Let’s look at some of those highlights from the first month of the school year at the Franklin School.

FRANKLIN 2023/24 SCHOOL MOTTO - BELIEVE!

Each year, the Franklin Family has a motto they carry with them throughout the year (and beyond)! We’ve had #Different ButNotLess (anyone remember that hybrid thing???), #BackToFranklin, #WhateverItTakes, and for the 23-24, we will #BELIEVE. This motto has so many layers to it. We rolled this out to students on our second day of school assembly and explained the philosophy behind it. At Franklin, we’re helping our students BELIEVE in themselves, BELIEVE in each other, and BELIEVE in Franklin, and all along the way, making sure that they know that we BELIEVE in every one of them. It’s great to hear so many people around the building saying they believe in someone or something or pushing each other to believe in themselves. When our Franklin Dragons believe they can do something, nothing can stop them!

DRAGONLING DAY

The day before school officially started, we continued our incoming dragonling tradition! Each year, we welcome our new 1st graders into the “Dragon’s Den” with our traditional clap-in to begin the circle that ends with our heartwarming 5th grade clap-out on their last day of school as 5th graders. At this special 1st Grade Orientation event, all incoming 1st graders and their parents/caregivers were welcomed into the cafeteria for a “Go Get’em” send-off to start their career at Franklin. The students came in excited and smiling; we lined them all up by class, and off they went! The parents/caregivers, teachers, and staff in attendance gave them a rousing round of applause as they walked out of the cafe and officially became Dragons. This helps with the transition on the first day of school the next day! They then came in on the first day and have rocked it ever since! Good luck, and we’re already so proud of you! Welcome to the squad!

CURRICULUM

There are a lot of great academic happenings to get excited about this year! Last year, we began our implementation of Wit and Wisdom (our new resource for literacy), and Franklin went all in across the board. Over the year, we spent many hours on professional development and collaboration of grade levels; and we even hosted a “come see what it looks like” to other interested districts. I could not be prouder of the staff and students for how well they adjusted to the big shift in how we think about learning to read and write, and I’m VERY excited to see where we go in year 2! Additionally, we’re looking to defend our ST Math title of most improved puzzle progress in the Commonwealth from last year! ST Math is an amazing resource to help ALL learners access spatial-temporal (that’s the “ST”) problem-solving with mathematical concepts. If you hear your child talking about JiJi, the penguin, that’s ST Math! With these and our other great resources, I know that Franklin students will continue to grow and shine!

PATRIOTS SPIRIT DAY

Franklin School is known far and wide for its spirit and the positive vibes they put out for the New England Patriots each season - basically, we’re the reason they win as much (or as little in recent years) as they do! The first weeks of school are so much fun for many reasons, but one of those reasons is our annual Patriots Spirit Day to kick off the year of Spirit at Franklin and the season for the PATS. One of the best things about Franklin is that our student body demonstrates Inclusion and Respect in everything they do - even spirit days! Each year, we have our die-hard fans of teams other than the Patriots wear the gear of those teams, and we have a good, friendly time with it! We have Dolphins, Steelers, Ravens, Seahawks, JETS - it pains me even to type that one! :), and many other teams represented, but regardless of whose jersey you’re wearing, we all know that we bleed the red and black of our Franklin Family, and that trumps all. The spirit is high, the competition is respectful, and we’re having fun… what more can you ask for? GO PATS!

SCHOOL COMMITTEE CORNER

Greetings from the North Andover School Committee,

I’m honored to have been selected by my colleagues to serve as Chair of your North Andover School Committee for this academic year, along with Mr. Joe Hicks as Vice-Chair and Ms. Alissa Koenig as Clerk. We sincerely thank former committee members Helen Pickard and Holly Vietzke-Lynch and recently retired Assistant Superintendent Lorene Marks for their service to North Andover Public Schools.

With our colleagues, Mr. Andrew McDevitt and Ms. Pam Pietrowski, we have a very busy year ahead of us, beginning with the construction of the Middle School addition and renovation already underway! A groundbreaking ceremony will be held on Tuesday, October 3, at 4:30 p.m. We would love to see you there. The Kittredge building project, in coordination with the Mass. School Building Authority is also proceeding nicely; 13 bids were received from firms looking to become our OPM (Owner’s Project Manager), and our building committee is selecting a short list of firms to interview and ultimately select who we will work with.

The fall is a busy time for all involved with open houses at all the schools, budget planning for the 2024/25 year, goal setting for our committee and the Superintendent, updating the Strategic Plan for the District, and more. We will be working with all the other Town Boards and committees to ensure that we continue to improve our facilities and our programs and make NAPS as good as they can possibly be!

We’ll be having Community Chats during each trimester – our first was to be at the Fall Festival, which was unfortunately postponed, so please keep an eye out for a rescheduled date for that (or if that is not rescheduled, a specific Community Chat time and place).

Thanks to our dedicated and talented staff for starting the school year off strong! I wish all of you a successful, productive, and healthy school year ahead.

Dave Brown, MBA/MSEE
