SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear NAPS Community,

Here we are in May already!  It is always a busy month for us, with MCAS testing, graduation prep, and end-of-year activity planning in all the schools.  I am happy to confirm that, barring any unforeseen school closures, our last day will be Friday, June 16, and it will be a half day of school for students.

May is also the month that the Town of North Andover holds its annual town meeting. This year’s meeting will be on Tuesday, May 16 at 6:30 pm at North Andover High School. I  encourage you to attend and take part in the important decisions that affect our town.  There are a couple of articles on the warrant that I would like to highlight of particular importance to the school district. Article 22 pertains to the General Fund and includes the FY24 operating budget for the school department. The FY24 budget represents a 5.5 percent increase, which will provide the resources needed to address unfinished learning as a result of the pandemic and provide support services for all students, including our highest-needs students.

Article 22 also provides funding for the Kittredge MSBA Building Project Feasibility Study and design services.

Article 18 represents the FY24 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) that takes into consideration North Andover’s Facilities Master Plan II which gives the town the ability to address its aging facilities, provide spaces more conducive to learning, and accommodate future enrollment growth in our schools. Specifically, funding will be earmarked to increase the gym size at the Anne Bradstreet Early Childhood Center as well as funding the North Andover Middle School renovation and addition. Together with the building of the new Kittredge Elementary School, these building projects represent a generational investment in the future of our children and community for which we should all be grateful.

Child Care provided by Community Programs for children grades K through 6 will be available at Town Meeting. The deadline for sign-up is Saturday, May 14, and more information can be found here.

Pam Lathrop Named Massachusetts Principal of the Year by the Massachusetts School Administrators'  Association

Just a few weeks ago, our Superintendent announced the appointment of Pam Lathrop as North Andover's new Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning beginning on July 1. It appears that Pam has something else to celebrate this month as she was just named by the Massachusetts School Administrators' Association as Principal of the Year. The selection committee indicated that "Ms. Lathrop emerged as the winner based on her passionate efforts in support of the students and staff at High Plain Elementary School" in Andover and found her to be a "forward thinker and team player."

Pam has also earned high praise from her colleagues in Andover, with one Administrator writing, "Pam is an educational leader of the highest caliber who applies her knowledge of child development, learning, and teaching to fulfill her commitment to the success for all students." The Andover Superintendent wrote, "She is a hands-on leader who is well respected by her faculty for her responsiveness, compassion, collaboration and dependability."

Clearly, Pam will be missed in Andover, but North Andover is delighted to welcome her back home!

NORTH ANDOVER YOUTH & RECREATION SERVICES CELEBRATES ITS 35TH YEAR!

Rick Gorman has directed the North Andover Youth & Recreation Services Program since its inception, and what started as a one-staff, one-room operation in 1988 has grown into arguably the most successful Youth and Recreation Department in the state servicing over 3,000 North Andover youth each year.

Operating out of the 19,000 square-foot Joseph N. Hermann Youth Center, the four-acre campus services fall under the following categories: Support Services, Recreation & Adventure Services, Youth Leadership & Mentoring, Social Programs, Field Trips & Special Events, along with a unique and cutting-edge partnership with the North Andover School system.

The program works with middle school and high school-aged youth throughout the school year, and during the extremely busy summer session, the Center offers programs for children in grades kindergarten through grade 12. The Youth Center charges a nominal fee for membership, but no child is ever turned away due to the inability to pay.

In addition to its Director, Rick Gorman, the Youth Center is staffed with an incredible and passionate group of professionals. The staff includes Demi Marsh, Assistant Director; Aisha Valdez, Support Services Coordinator; Cam White, Adventure/ Rec Coordinator; Nicole Kramer, Social Programs Coordinator; Allison Capone, Social Worker; Jenn Battersby, Administrative Assistant; Molly Malandrino, Holiday Drive Coordinator; and Nicole Sharp, Saturday Coordinator.

Rick is excited to announce that the program will be adding a 5,000-square-foot addition to the Youth Center in 2027  which will provide more academic and music/art space.

The Center is located at 33 Johnson Street, and staff can be reached by phone at 978-682-9000 or by email at info@nayouth.com.

The Youth Center offers many activities but is also just a great place to hang out with friends!

NAHS Freshman is Semifinalist in National Science Bee

Congratulations to Medhansh Choudhury, a freshman at North Andover High School, who qualified for the 9/10th grade division of the National Science Bee in Arlington, VA, and finished 7th after the three preliminary rounds (top sixteen advanced). His final placement was 11th.

Medhansh represented NAMS in the National Science Bee nationals for three years while a student at NAMS and did particularly well in his third year when he placed 2nd in the regional event and was a quarterfinalist at the nationals.

Medhansh is hoping that next April more NAMS and NAHS students will take the qualifying exam so that he can compete alongside other representatives of North Andover schools.

DISTRICT SPOTLIGHT

Kittredge School

by Richard Cushing, Principal & Kittredge School Staff Members

Kittredge School Students are Blooming This Spring!

The Kittredge School is happy to see the return of extra curricular activities for our students this year. While the academic success of students is very important, the social/emotional growth and feeling of community is equally as important and it has been amazing to see the kids once again working together to learn, share, and grow.

Recycling Program

The Kittredge Green Team was excited to jump back into action this year. Cheryl Means, our amazing Teaching Assistant, is leading a dedicated crew of students in our school’s efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle waste materials from the classroom to the lunchroom, while Dennis Oullette, our extraordinary custodian, is doing a phenomenal job keeping the system running smoothly. The Kittredge Green Team is making a difference every day!

Did you know that all North Andover students are composting at lunch? Together we are saving over 2,500 pounds PER WEEK of food waste/trays from being trash! We are using 60 less trash bags a DAY!

RAISE-Ins

This year saw the rise of the RAISE-ins again, and fourth- and fifth-grade students couldn’t wait to join this group. Mr. Cushing, the school principal, meets weekly with the RAISE-ins to develop their leadership skills and roles within the school. Lunchtime meetings involve discussions around improving the school, planning of assemblies, and training for specific leadership roles such as “set-up crew” for the audio equipment or “Kid Stop Leaders” who escort students to the Kid Stop location. Kittredge RAISE-ins are developing the skills necessary to become future leaders!

Guitar Club

Mr. Cushing continues to share his love of music with students through the guitar club. This club currently has about 30 students eager to learn songs that they will play at whole school assemblies. With such a large group, it is fortunate that fifth grade TA Olivia Maimaron is also a guitar enthusiast, and she joined the club as well. Kittredge students “ROCK” in so many ways.

March Mathness

Kittredge students love a challenge! This was never more evident than watching the competition between classrooms as we launched our first annual March Mathness challenge. Over the four weeks, students solved more than 130,000 puzzles! Ultimately, only one classroom could be the Kittredge 22-23 ST Math Champion, and that honor went to Mrs. Randall’s fourth-grade class. Congratulations!

As students complete their grade-level ST Math journey, they receive a Golden Jiji award that is posted on our ST Math wall. We currently have over 70 Golden Jiji recipients! Students love to stop by to see the new additions to the Golden Jiji wall. Go Kittredge!

We are better together!

The Kittredge community is strong thanks to the dedication of teachers, the support of parents, and the perseverance of students. The Kittredge School is a special place to learn and grow!
