SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear North Andover Community,

Excitement and anticipation are in the air at this time of year, and I am filled with gratitude as I visit the classrooms, witness the hard work of our teachers, and the eagerness of students as they proudly display their work. During the upcoming break, I hope you have the opportunity to spend time with family and friends.

As a reminder, December 23 is a half day for students, with the high school students being dismissed at 11:00 a.m., middle school students at 11:05 a.m., elementary students at 11:50 a.m., and ABECC students at 12:00 noon. Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.

The new year promises to be filled with positive changes for the district as we see the work in planning for the Kittredge and NAMS building projects coming to fruition. The NAMS School Building Committee has already begun meeting, and the Kittredge School Building Committee will be meeting shortly. If the funds are approved at this May’s Town Meeting, construction on the Middle School project should begin in August of 2023.

This is the time of year when we begin our budget process for the next fiscal year. The Superintendent's Recommended Budget will be presented to the School Committee on

January 12; a Public Hearing will be held by the School Committee on January 19, and the School Committee budget adoption vote will occur on February 2, 2023.   I encourage you to follow the budget process by attending School Committee meetings or watching the meetings on local cable channels (Comcast 99 or Verizon 28).  Videos of School Committee meetings are also available to stream from the North Andover Cam website.  Budget documents will be available on the district website and will be linked to School Committee agendas.  You can sign up to receive School Committee agendas via email by subscribing on the Town Website.

For those of you with children who will be five years of age on or before August 31, 2023, our online kindergarten pre-registration for the 2023/24 school year will begin in March when complete information regarding the kindergarten registration process will be posted on the Anne Bradstreet Early Childhood Center (ABECC) webpage.

Thank you for the continued support of our schools and best wishes for a happy and healthy new year.

Next Generation 911 System

Details of the Next Generation 9-1-1 system were sent to MA School Superintendents by the State's Executive Office of Public Safety and Security in an effort to educate middle school and high school students and staff about the two new lifesaving features of this system. The first is "Text-to-911" which allows a person that is unable to speak or hear to communicate via text with a 911 dispatcher. The second is the "Silent Call Procedure" which allows a person that is unable to speak to call 911, and when the call is answered by the

dispatcher, to press the following digits on their phone:  1 for the police department, 2 for the fire department, and 3 for an ambulance or medical services. This way the dispatcher can send help immediately. These two features of the 911 system are valuable and can provide the ability to save a life when used. Please share these new features with family and friends.

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND ENDEAVORS

NAHS SCIENCE TEAM BIG WINNERS IN MONTHLY SCIENCE COMPETITIONS

Paul Vigeant, a very proud NAHS Science Teacher, announced that on Tuesday, November 15, the North Andover High School science team won its second consecutive monthly competition. The November competition was held at NAHS with approximately 250 students from 14 high schools competing.  NAHS earned 1st place in meteorology, 1st place in periscope building, and 1st place in the catapulting event. They also finished in 3rd place in the chemistry escape room event.  The Scarlet Knights remain in 1st place overall for the year.

Mr. Vigeant noted that NAHS now has a comfortable lead through the first few months of the science competition season and that the team representing NAHS has done so with tremendous poise and pride.

FORMER NAMS STUDENTS PRESENT CIVICS PROJECTS TO THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE

Mr. McGravey & current 9th graders ( Morgan, Brynn, Kylie, Alex & Yash) did an amazing job presenting how their Student Led Civics Projects have made NA a better community at School Committee tonight. ⁦@NAMiddle

NAMS 8th grade teacher, Pat McGravey, has been working for many years to integrate Civics into his curriculum. Finally, the Civics Action Bill was passed in 2018 which paved the way for the Student-Led Civics Projects to begin one year later. Unfortunately, COVID-19 interrupted the group work until 2021/22 when student group work and individual work began

in earnest. Students followed an action plan which

included identifying an issue, researching and investigating root causes, developing an action plan, then taking action. The final step of reflecting on and showcasing their work occurred at the School Committee Meeting on November 17, 2022, when Mr. McGravey and a number of students from last year's 8th-grade class presented their projects to the School Committee.

The first students who presented were girls who felt strongly about a lack of feminine hygiene products available to students at NAMS. The group worked with the school nurses and Dr. Mealey to correct issues that had made the products inaccessible and to provide information to students on how to access the products.

The next student presenter, a Haudenosaunee descendant, was inspired by his native American culture to pursue Land Acknowledgements, a formal statement that recognizes Indigenous people as the

traditional stewards of the land. After working with

the Town Manager, State Representatives, and the staff at the North Andover Historical Society, the student was able to incorporate his statement into North Andover's 4th of July celebration and hopes to integrate the reading of Land Acknowledgement into other town events in the future.

The final presentation was made by a student who researched the negative impact of oxidization, visible on the drinking fountains at NAMS. The student then organized a survey of his fellow students and teachers concerning their perception of the quality of water at NAMS and presented his findings to school administrators and a State Representative. The student's project resulted in funding for water-bottle-filling stations at NAMS.

The important lesson in each of these examples, according to the student presenters, is that anyone can make a difference--it may take a little research to locate the appropriate resources, both human and material--but one must persevere.

DISTRICT SPOTLIGHT

NAHS - Chet Jackson, Principal

North Andover High School is off to a great start this school year. Each year the National Merit Scholarship Program recognizes students based on their PSAT scores. In September, we received word regarding accolades for three of our seniors from the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. Congratulations to Leo Nachamie, Ava Petrosino, and Jonathon Hale on being named Commended Students.

In October, led by the Class of 2023 officers, NAHS celebrated the return of our homecoming football game, and a record turnout of over 900 NAHS students participated safely in our semi-formal homecoming dance. This fall we also welcomed the return of our Spanish exchange program where NAHS students hosted students from Granada, Spain. Both sets of our Spanish student visitors had a terrific experience in the U.S., and NAHS students are excited to visit Spain in February. Our faculty and students have been active in co-curricular athletics, clubs, and field trips during the first three months of school, and major congratulations are extended to Zoe, Luke, Ozias, Keenan, and Jonathon on Robotics Team 8568A for winning the Excellence Award!

Our athletic department recognized five senior athletes and their families for signing a National Letter of Intent to Compete next year in college; and lastly, we celebrated the 93 NAHS Seniors who are John and Abigail Adams Scholarship recipients with their parents on December 7 in the cafeteria.

SPECIAL EDUCATION

Child-Find Request from the Executive Director of Special Education

In accordance with Massachusetts Special Education legislation, the North Andover Public School District is making every effort to locate, identify, and evaluate children with special needs who may have a disability and may be entitled to specialized educational services.  Regardless of the severity of the disability, it is the North Andover Public School District’s responsibility to determine if the child is eligible for special education or related services under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) or 306 CMR 28 (Massachusetts Special Education Regulations).  Referrals may come from a parent, physician, preschool program, or early intervention services.  The age limits include three-year-olds (preschool) through twenty-one-year-olds up to the twenty-second birthday.

If you are a parent or agency that comes into contact with a child who you suspect may have educationally disabling conditions and is not currently being serviced under the auspices of the North Andover Public School District, we would appreciate your notifying or referring the parent(s) and/or individuals to the Department of Special Education.
