Secure Assessment

Exam security is achieved through a combination of various measures as well as vigilant supervision. For paper and pencil exams the items available to the student are controlled in addition to supervision.

As the number of students increase the abilty for a teacher to maintain vigilant supervision over all students using technology for assessments becomes more difficult.

When considering using technology for assessment consider the following option may be useful to you.

There are four types of technology assisted assessment identified as occuring in our schools at this time.

1. Exit ticket, in class check

  • Students use their own account with full access to all resources and the internet. This is an open account scenario.

2. Formative

  • Students use their own account with full access to all resources and the internet. This is an open account scenario.

3. In year Summative

  • Students use their own account with limited access to resources and the internet. This is a closed account scenario.

4. End of Year/Provincial Assessments/Publics/ In Year with accomodations

  • Students use an account created for the assessment process. It has access only to the resources required for the assessment. This is a restricted account scenario.

The secure assessment process in pilot at this time covers the 4th type, restricted account, in particular for students with technology accomodations.

Restricted Account Protocol

This applies to Chromebooks only at this time. Work on a Windows alternative is continuing.

1. Determine what type of assessment resources you will be providing students.

Group 1 - Classroom delivery

a. An audio recording of the teacher reading the test

b. A PDF for the student to read

c. A video

For these items setup a Google Classroom and make the Restricted Account a student in that class. These three types of files can be posted in the Classroom as an announcement by the teacher for the student to access. In this case the restricted account ONLY has access to Classroom and any files that will display in the black overlay above Classroom.

Group 2 - A Google Form

If the assessment is a Google Form the restricted account can be extended to allow access to Forms. For convenience the Form can still be delivered through Classroom.

Group 3 - A Google Docs, Slides and Drive

If the student will be writing in Docs or Slides to complete the assessment they need access to Drive, and Docs. The sidebar cover-up is used to prevent access to the Explore and Search windows that open on the right side of the Docs screen. This will also remove access to any other sidebars (such as themes in Slides)

This comes with the following extensions

  • the free version of TextHelp Read & Write
  • the Docs, Slides sidebar cover-up

2. Request secure assessment accounts through the IT Assist portal. If you are using Group 1 or Group 2 resources you can use 1 restricted account over many Chromebooks. If you are using Group 3 resources you need 1 restricted account PER Chromebook.

3. Sign in the account on the Chromebook and pass the device to the student to do the assessment. Students should not know the password to the account.

4. When the assessment is over collect the Chromebooks, collect the student exams, and check Drive thoroughly to ensure all materials have been removed. Empty the trash can.

Explore

To try out a restricted account use these credentials. Note that you must either login on a Chromebook OR login to a Chrome profile on Windows. Log in to a google app in a browser will not trigger the restrictions.
