This course is built on the belief that anyone can learn to draw and paint with the right techniques and a bit of practice.We begin by mastering the "language of lines," building a rigorous foundation in drawing before transitioning into the fluid world of watercolors and the bold, versatile layering of acrylics. Students will explore color theory, composition, and personal expression while developing a body of work. This course is an immersive exploration of form, space, and structure. Students will transition from the ancient traditions of ceramic arts to the innovative world of contemporary sculpture, learning how to manipulate a wide variety of materials to bring their ideas into the physical world. We will explore the versatile medium of clay through many methods including the pottery wheel, hand building and experiment with glazing, painting and carving functional and sculptural pieces.We will challenge our understanding of "weight" and "balance" using an array of diverse materials including: constructing with wire and wood and transforming everyday cardboard and paper mache into large-scale, lightweight sculptural pieces. We will also incorporate natural materials (stones, branches, fibers) to bridge the gap between art and the environment. Art history and contemporary art explorations in research and writing are a part of this course.

Step out of the classroom and into the world. This course is designed for students who want to bridge the gap between traditional tactile art and digital technology. You will participate in regular "Photography Walks," learning to capture the world through a lens while exploring our local environment. We will learn the basic technical aspects of digital photography while also exploring the principles of design and the elements of art. Once back in the studio, you’ll explore editing and digital collaging in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. Digital isn't the end of the road. You will print your work and bring it back into the physical world. Using your photos as a base, you’ll experiment with mixed media techniques, incorporating paper, paint, found objects, and natural materials. Art history and contemporary art explorations in research and writing are a part of this course.

An introduction to the nature of theater as a performing art. Students study selected plays from the perspectives of actors and directors. They will perform short pieces individually as well as in small groups. They will also write their own short pieces, and will perform written analysis on the strategies of playwrights to develop the ability to imagine the play in performance and to appreciate the range of theater's possibilities.
