Areas of Innovation, Strategic Improvement & Research Impact

Areas of Innovation

Each Cluster Office is tasked with working with their HEI host to lead on activities in a specialised Areas of Innovation in Research. Each area is aligned to the area of expertise for that HEI. The aim is to ensure that the NIHR CRNs infrastructure responds to changes in the research landscape and that opportunities are taken so that further improvements are made to the NIHR CRN's HLOs and key objectives.

Pan-NIHR Initiatives

Strategic Improvement & Engagement Projects & Initiatives

The Medical Directorate is responsible for developing policy and guidance for the NIHR on the recommended approach to research for those living with multiple long-term conditions (MLTC-M). Led by Cluster A and E and supported by Cluster B and C, the project will focus on:

Improved Clinical Trial Design and Delivery

This large scale project is being led by Cluster E and supported by Clusters C, D and F. The project will involve the implementation of INCLUDE guidance and recommendations for remote delivery of clinical trials, thanking, acknowledging and informing participants and research into Life course.

The NIHR AGP Research Group, in collaboration with the UK Independent High Risk AGP Panel, have been working with AGP researchers to further the delivery of critical research and identify evidence gaps to inform NHS guidance and policy.

Each year we run several consultant/trainee/PPIE research excellence awards schemes in conjunction with Royal Colleges and learned organisations.

A number of our specialties have Champions who help support the development and delivery of sub-specialty and priority area portfolios.

Our National Specialty Leads and NSGs are integral to engaging potential research leaders of the future.  Find out about the initiatives we run for trainees and those new to research.

Cross Directorate Working Project

Demonstrating Impact and Value

NIHR supported research is improving the health of the public nationally and internationally. It is also making the NHS more effective, cost effective and safer. By filling gaps in evidence of clinical effectiveness, we help to develop treatments that are safer, less invasive and more focused on patients’ quality of life.

Our specialty research contributes to guidelines for clinical practice at both the national and international levels which in turn support improvements to commissioning practices, medical education and clinical communication.

Each Specialty have developed case study examples of research they have supported which demonstrate clear value to patients, public and NHS Services. View all 30 Specialty Impact Case Studies by clicking the button below.
