Two clinical areas were identified as the initial focus for this ETI and a Med Tech Reference group was set up, with representation from various NIHR infrastructures (i4i, HTC, DEC, CLAHRC, CRN) to explore cross cutting issues, such as those around funding, industry engagement, and effective trial design.
Following broad consultation with stakeholders and the community, reports relating to the use of devices in the following fields have been produced: a) chronic obstructive pulmonary disease b) endovascular devices. [add hyperlink]
A report that describes how to take a medical device from bench top to procurement by NHS has been produced. This examines common barriers experienced by industry, potential regulatory pitfalls and how NIHR can help companies to navigate the process.
Meetings continue to take place with stakeholders to collate issues identified by researchers/Med Tech developers. We are partnering with the London MedTech in vitro Cooperative (MIC) and also involving Centre for Health Policy staff from Imperial’s Institute of Global Health Innovation and hosted an event in 2020 to discuss potential solutions with industry and regulatory bodies.
