After conducting a field visit and speaking with everyone involved in the process, I uncovered several critical gaps. One major issue is the lack of knowledge on how to properly clean and segregate leather footwear. This knowledge gap means that discarded leather footwear is often seen as worthless. Furthermore, the few individuals who do attempt to collect and sell segregated leather find that they receive little to no value for their efforts. As a result, many have stopped participating in this activity altogether, leading to more leather footwear ending up in dump yards. This highlights the need for better education and economic financial benefits in leather waste management.
