Our study on community building in Dhokra craft is based out of Kondagoan, a town in the Bastar region.
There are groups of artisans existing in the region which are divided according to the existing communities and also groups initiated by the govt schemes.
With the intervention of upper powers, the community has started seeing a divide because of competition. The focus is on individual growth rather than individual growth.
Types of groups existing:
SHGS (Self-help groups)
Shilp Gram Yojna
Tribes India
Hastshilp vikas board
A Dhokra Panchayat System, at the Gram (village level) level, is formed for the artisans and built by the artisans to discuss new ways of making and create together.
Creating together continuously contributes to the traditional knowledge and replenishes it. The panchayat is a space where verbal and hands-on activities are conducted.
The idea expects a bigger role of artisans as the participants of their community.
Every artisan has a role to play.
For them, with them.
We are not saying that we want to go back to the traditional knowledge system but we can bring the characteristics of traditional knowledge system in the artisanal community so that they are able to focus again on sharing and learning from each other in order to think creatively in their own ways of doing and making.
CreART is an assisting body to the Kondagaon Dhokra Panchayat.
We want to protect, promote and revitalize traditional knowledge of the craft-based communities.
We collaborate with artisans and the artisanal community to establish a shared system that involves traditional perspectives. Our idea is not just about coming together but also growing and staying together in a progressive manner.
It is a capacity-building service that helps to increase knowledge, skill, ability, and awareness in the areas of creative thinking, cultural heritage & brings people together for a common vision by increased participation in order to achieve good team spirit.
Our mission is to amplify traditional knowledge, values, resiliency, and validation through connection, ability, and collaboration.
We also provide culture identity, preservation, and revitalization programs for artisanal communities to utilize their already given strengths.
WHAT WE DO
Create system-level programs with Artisanal communities and for artisanal community
Community building by coming together with the collective mindset
Support the Artisanal community to develop on their own.
Problem-solving approach by identifying the needs of the artisanal community.
Dhokra Panchayat is a village (Gram level) system/ service built by the Artisans where people are collectively coming together to engage in verbal & activity-based discussions related to craft. The artisans acquire various roles in order to conduct the Panchayat sessions.
The master artisans act as Influencer and ensure the correct transmission of traditional knowledge. The artisanal community is free to participate and interact in its own ways and methods.
The space designed for artisans will be constructed in such a way that reflects their own culture and way of living so that they can connect well with it and develop a sense of belongingness.
The Panchayat is an informal space where the exchange of ideas, knowledge, skills can take place freely. Master Artisans, artisan families, and support groups play their roles as learners, educators, and managers of the Panchayat. The motive is to encourage the idea of participating and sharing which will eventually strengthen the relationship's between all the people involved as well as increase the sense of belongingness towards the place and people of the community.

Stakeholder Mapping
CreART along with the people of kondagaon will work towards the building of Dhokra panchayat, Which consists of master artisans, artisans, support group, construction team, space management team, Raw material coordinator, ship sangrahalaya coordinator, communication department, etc.
So here, Most of the stakeholders are from the kondagaon itself because we want them to feel that the dhokra panchayat is just their creation, and for them only also our idea is to design with them and for them.
We CreART, after understanding the lifestyle of the kondagaon people like how many panchayats should be there in the kondagaon, and listed all the master Artisans and artisans of the kondagaon. Our main step is to encourage the master artisans to connect with the system and then introduce them to the kondagaon as an influencer and tell them to encourage other artisans and support groups to join this initiative. Also, introduce them to their benefits. Mapped the system of kondagaon with the master artisans and find the perfect place for building the panchayat space.
In the panchayat space, there are three areas, Dhokra ship sangrahalaya where the artisans can display their products for selling and The Activity area is an open space where all the artisans perform various activities discussions, and sessions.
Also, the master artisan narrates stories to the artisans, crafting and making of the products, and also there are several cultural events, Dhokra fair and setting up stalls for selling the products.
And, The Raw material Ghar is a space where all the raw material is stored for the artisans so that they will procure material from there and also there is a Transportation system for traveling across the village.
The service landmark during pre service would be to collaborate with master artisans for better analysis and formation of plan followed by setting up of panchayat space with the help of artisans so that they feel a sense of belonging with the place and eventually developing the e-dhokra panchayat for selling of dhokra products and virtual sessions for artisans. During service, There will be more focus given on sharing and learning, documentation of all the tasks, work and sessions conducted at space, the exhibition of all the craft products created by artisans and ultimately in post service, there will be acknowledgement of work done by artisans as well as a hope of cultural awakening.
