Dhokra craft has been discovered in the relics of the Mohenjidaro and Harappan civilizations. Dhokra art is inspired by tribal themes of animals, mythical creatures, human creatures, natural shapes, etc. The region is a rich tradition of craft and culture. Dhokra craft is a specialization of the Bastar region residing in Chattisgarh. The craft reflects the tribal community, their lifestyle, behavior, and preferences. A large number of Bastar tribals still live in deep forests and avoid mingling with outsiders in order to protect their own unique culture. The tribes of Bastar are also known for their colorful festivals and arts and crafts. The craft has traveled along with nomads from Bastar to different regions of India and today we can experience Dhokra craft in various styles and varieties.
A traditional community of artisans residing in the Bastar region of Chattisgarh, with common interests of Dhokra Craft, and a plan of actions related to daily living. With a high community spirit, they engage in sharing of ideas, knowledge & skills. The community functions on the basis of collective support from each other, emotionally, financially & physically which reflect the bond and strength between them.
With the upper powers (Modern influences like digitization, Online platforms, government, Traders, managers, NGO's, etc ) coming in, the community has started seeing a divide because of competition. Individual artisans have started selling their products which has made them money centric. This has given rise to mental divide, which has resulted in a decrease in sharing of ideas and knowledge. Focus is on individual growth and meeting basic needs than collective development. The bond between the community has started to weaken and ego issues have started to emerge in terms of work due to attitudinal shift & divided interests in lives of artisans.
We went through the existing solutions and measures taken to tackle the problems. We have taken in account all the relevant gaps and tried to propose solution that can sensitize artisans as well as consumers and eventually bring a difference in the mindset and shift the focus towards collective development of artisanal communities.
