NISD transportation center is first major bond project to be completed

Of the major projects associated with the 2018 Bond Proposal, the Nacogdoches ISD Transportation Center renovation and expansion is the first to be completed. Work began on the site in November 2019 when transportation offices were relocated to portable buildings staged in the parking lot of Dragon Stadium. Soon, the district's bus fleet was moved, mostly to the stadium parking lot, although some buses were parked at other locations.

In August, just before school started, work was completed at the site, which greatly expanded the district's facility for repairing and conducting regular maintenance on its fleet. NISD can now house six buses in the garage area and close roll-up doors on both ends, allowing for climate control of the work area.

New offices were also a part of the project, and an expanded meeting area now allows the district's drivers to gather in one area for daily updates.

Outside, the parking lot and drive were expanded and the entire lot was resurfaced. A massive bus wash was constructed, and the district now has its own fuel station.

See the posts below to follow the project from its start to completion (the earliest posts start at the bottom of the page).

NISD Transportation Center nearing completion, staff begins moving in this week

August 5, 2020

The first major project funded by the bond voters approved in 2018 will soon be open for business. The district’s transportation center is nearing completion, and NISD staff will begin moving into the new facility later this week.

Much of the original building was retained, but it was reconfigured and renovated to create much needed office space and a large meeting area for our bus drivers and transportation staff. New areas were added on for transportation staff offices and a large meeting room for drivers, and garage area was expanded to accommodate six full-size buses at one time. The large roll-up doors at each end can be closed while the buses are inside, and the work area is now climate-controlled.

Under normal circumstances, NISD would celebrate the completion of this work with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Instead, our celebration is put on hold... photos and a video are posted here to give the public a first look at the facility.

"NISD is grateful for the Board of Trustees as well as the voters of NISD for overwhelming support in 2018 to provide the funds to complete the transportation center," said Superintendent Dr. Gabriel Trujillo. "And let’s not forget the vision and mission of our former superintendent, Alton Frailey, who saw what this facility could be."

Transportation facility nears completion

July 16, 2020

The new transportation office and facility located west of the high school campus is nearing completion. The main garage area has been expanded, and there will be enough workspace under roof to accommodate six full-sized school buses for repairs with room to close the bay doors on each end of the building. There will be about 30 feet between buses, enough room for tool cabinets and other materials.

On the south side of the building, office space has been expanded and existing areas have been completely renovated. New construction at the site includes additional parts storage as well as a compressor and greater storage for fluids used during general maintenance of vehicles.

The entire parking lot and drive have been resurfaced. A larger fuel tank and more pumps have been installed as well as a covered bus wash site.

At the transportation center, where the main garage area has been expanded, there will be enough workspace under roof to accommodate six full-sized school buses for repairs with room to close the bay doors on each end of the building. There will be about 30 feet between buses for tool cabinets and other materials.

On the south side of the building, office spaces has been expanded and is being completely renovated. New construction at the site will also provide additional parts storage as well as a compressor and greater storage for fluids used during general maintenance of vehicles.

This week, weather permitting, 24 loads of cement will be delivered to pour 240 yards of concrete along the backside of the building. Once completed, concrete work will be finished at the site. The remainder of the center’s parking area and drive will be covered with asphalt, with the first layer going down this week.

A covered bus wash is located on the north side of the transportation center complex, and a fuel island is on the east side. Fuel storage will include both diesel and gasoline for the NISD fleet.

Transportation center expansion project continues

February 27, 2020

Work is progressing on the renovation and expansion of NISD's transportation center. The project, funded by the 2018 NISD bond package, will greatly enlarge garage facilities where NISD staff perform repairs and routine maintenance on buses. The larger capacity will allow six full-size school buses to be inside, with the roll-up doors closed... important on both cold and hot days. Previously, four buses could fit in the garage but the large doors had to remain open. The project is also renovating and expanding office and meeting space and creating new covered fuel and bus wash stations.

work continues at nisd transportation center

January 9, 2020

Construction continues on the $3.36 million renovation and expansion of Nacogdoches ISD’s transportation center located along NE Stallings Drive adjacent to the high school.

The project is part of the $77.9 million bond package approved by NISD voters in November of 2018.

Crews have started pouring concrete around the existing facility included in the renovation portion of the project. Additional office space is also being added on the south side of the building.

Plans call for the garage to be renovated and expanded. Much of the interior of the remaining building has already been stripped away.

While construction continues, district transportation offices are being housed in temporary facilities set up in the parking lot of nearby Dragon Stadium. Buses, when not in use, are also parked at the stadium or at Margie Chumbley Academy for Success located on North Street

Once complete, the remodeled and enlarged transportation center will have a new bus wash and fuel station as well as new offices and meeting rooms. Also, the parking lot will be resurfaced. The project is expected to take about nine months to complete.

Much of the facility has already been demolished and forms are being set up before additional concrete is poured around the existing garage, which is being renovated and enlarged.

Once complete, the remodeled transportation center will have a new bus wash and fuel station as well as new offices and meeting rooms. Also, the parking lot will be resurfaced.

During their October meeting, NISD trustees approved the project’s cost of $3,364,900, which came in about $1.5 million less than the amount budgeted by the district.
