Aboriginal math education: Collaborative learning | Stavros Stavrou | TEDxSaskatoon
This talk challenges the dominant perspective of how mathematics is learned and taught, and shows how we can create an engaging and meaningful discussion in the math classroom that incorporate Indigenous knowledge and anti-racist practices. This talk addresses a way to contextualize mathematics and bring Indigenous narratives into the subject.
Traditional Indigenous Mathematics
What is traditional Indigenous mathematics? Find out from firekeeper, grass dancer, fisherman and Ojibwe language teacher Bryan Bellefeuille, a father of three and Anishinaabe of Nipissing First Nation. From making tools and measuring trees to building canoes and cooking meals, explore the many uses of math in traditional settings. Take a digital walk with Bryan and tour a pine grove to understand the importance of land-based learning. Expand the way you think about math!
Teaching Mathematics in Relationship with Indigenous Ways of Knowing

November 3, 2021: Re-Imagining Math Education:Teaching & Learning Math through Place/Land
The first session of our series Connecting Mathematics, Community and Culture. In this session four teachers share stories of math and place/land to imagine mathematics education differently. Teacher stories include the power of place and mathematical inquiry grounded outside an urban school, within a rural community, and guided by teachings of cedar on the Pacific Westcoast and taping of maple trees in eastern and western Canada.
November 24, 2021: Re-Imagining Math Education: Indigenous Storywork and Math Education
This webinar series invites teachers at all levels to join discussions and sharing for re-imagining mathematics education through culture, community, and teaching for social and ecological justice.
Sessions will include topics such as teaching and learning mathematics through place/land; exploring how Indigenous storywork can guide mathematics education for respectful and relational engagement in community; developing approaches and contexts for learning mathematics to read (understand) and write (transform) the world; and exploring possibilities for emerging inquiries from participants.

Session 1 – Culturally Responsive Math Education
(November 14, 2022)
In this series we explore the nature of culturally responsive mathematics education through connections to land, story, community and mathematics. We look to nature and Indigenous perspectives to conceptualize learning that includes cycles of feedback (with self, others, environment, and materials) and discuss approaches and principles for culturally responsive math assessment.
Session 2 – Looking to Nature: Math education assessment as cycles of feedback
(February 2, 2023)
Session 3 – Practicing Culturally Responsive Math Assessment
(March 3, 2023)
You’ve likely heard of culturally responsive math education (CRME). But what about culturally responsive math assessment! How can we assess students’ mathematical knowledge and competencies through the practices of CRME?
