WELCOME TO GRADE 4!! EXPLORE THE SUBJECT TABS TO DISCOVER WHAT YOU ARE LEARNING THIS YEAR!!
In this lesson you will be learning to estimate the sums of 2 numbers. When you estimate a sum, you find a number that is close to the sum. There are many times in life when you don't need an exact number but you just need to be close when you add two numbers together. Can you think of a time in your life where estimating a sum would come in handy?
When a question asks, "about how many" you can estimate. When you estimate, you use numbers that are close but easier to work with. We often estimate with numbers ending in 0 because they are a lot easier to add together.
Watch the video below that will help you understand how to estimate to find the sum of 2 numbers.
Go to Google Classroom and complete the assignment called, Lesson 1: "Estimating Sums" in the Classwork section under the Math 2. Addition and Subtraction Unit.
Turn in the assignment for grading.
For extra practice work on learning about graphs, go to IXL Math Grade 4 Number Sense Section and work on the following: B.8 and B.9.
In the last lesson we learned how estimation can help us add numbers quickly and come close to the actual sum.
In this lesson we will be learning 3 mental math strategies that will help you add 3 digit numbers together without having to write the numbers down. Mental math strategies will help you better understand math. Mental math strategies help create connections in the brain that make homework easier and can help make new concepts easier to learn.
Watch the video below that will explain three different mental math strategies to add 3 digit numbers in your head.
Go to Google Classroom and complete the assignment called, Lesson 2: "Using Mental Math to Add" in the Classwork section under the Math 2. Addition and Subtraction Unit.

For extra practice work on learning about graphs, go to IXL Math Grade 4 Number Sense Section and work on the following: B.1, B.2, and B.3.
In the past two lessons you have learned how to estimate and how to use mental math strategies to add numbers.
In this lesson you will learn how to add 3-Digit numbers by using place value to add numbers from left to right as well as how to use base ten blocks on a place value mat to add. I will also teach you the standard method of addition from right to left that uses carrying and regrouping.
Watch the videos below that will explain three different addition strategies to add 3 digit numbers.
Go to Google Classroom and complete the assignment called, Lesson 3: "Adding 3-Digit Numbers" in the Classwork section under the Math 2. Addition and Subtraction Unit.

For extra practice work on learning about graphs, go to IXL Math Grade 4 Number Sense Section and work on the following: B.1, B.2, and B.3.
In the last lesson you learned strategies to add 3-Digit numbers. In this lesson you will be practicing these strategies to add 4-Digit numbers.
You will quickly realize that if you can add 3-Digit numbers correctly, adding 4-Digit numbers is quite easy. You use the same strategy and continue the process just adding the thousands. Remember, you will need to regroup if any of the place value houses add up to 10 or more!!
Watch the videos below that will explain the strategies adding from right to left and column addition to add 4 digit numbers.
Go to Google Classroom and complete the assignment called, Lesson 4: "Adding 4-Digit Numbers" in the Classwork section under the Math 2. Addition and Subtraction Unit.

For extra practice work on learning about graphs, go to IXL Math Grade 4 Number Sense Section and work on the following: B.1, B.2, and B.3.
In this lesson you will be learning to estimate the differences of 2 numbers. When you estimate differences, you find a number that is close to the difference. There are many times in life when you don't need an exact number but you just need to be close when you subtract two numbers. Can you think of a time in your life where estimating a sum would come in hany?
When a question asks, "about how many" or "about how much" you can estimate. When you estimate, you use numbers that are close but easier to work with. We often estimate with numbers ending in 0 because they are a lot easier to subtract from one another.
Watch the video below that will explain estimation strategies to find the difference between 2 numbers.

In the past two lessons you have learned how to estimate and how to use mental math strategies to subtract numbers.
In this lesson you will learn how to subtract 3-Digit numbers by using the following strategies: making a friendly number, using Base Ten Blocks on a place value mat and Counting On from the smallest number to the greatest number.
Watch the videos below that will explain three different subtraction strategies to subtract 3 digit numbers.

You will quickly realize that if you can add 3-Digit numbers correctly, adding 4-Digit numbers is quite easy. You can use the same strategy and continue the process just subtracting the thousands. Remember, you will need to regroup if any of the top numbers in the place value houses are less than 10!! You CANNOT take a greater number from a smaller number!!
Watch the videos below that will explain the strategies to subtract 4 digit numbers. I will also be explaining how to subtract two numbers using the standard method of subtracting numbers from right to left.

Solving addition and subtraction problems are very important skills to master because it will help you solve problems in everyday life.
In order to solve addition and subtraction problems it is really good to know the clue words in the problem that help you figure out whether you need to add or to subtract.
In this assignment you will be practicing how to add 3 numbers. When writing the 3 numbers make sure the place value digits are in a line. If the place value digits are not in a line it is very easy to make a mistake.
Watch the video below that will explain how to add more than 2 numbers and how to solve problems that may require you to add and to subtract to get the answer.
