Open to: Grade 11 (10th with instructor approval)
Length: 2 semesters
Credits: 1 credit (This course is either an elective credit or qualifies for the grade 11 English requirement or grade 12 English.)
Prerequisites: Students should be able to read and comprehend college-level texts and apply the conventions of standard written English in their writing.
NOTE: Students enrolling in an AP® class will automatically be registered for that course's exam.
NOTE: This course is College Board approved for AP®. AP® Seminar is a component of the Capstone Program. NHS is an authorized Capstone school beginning in 2017-18.
Content: AP® Seminar is a course unlike any other. Let your passions and interests guide your exploration of news stories, research studies, artistic and literary works as you examine the past, present and future of being an American. You will share your learning through discussions, group and individual projects, presentations and papers.
In Seminar students will examine materials like news stories, research studies, art, and literary works so they can craft arguments to support their point of view and communicate it effectively through writing, discussion and the use of various media in a team and individual projects and presentations. AP®Seminar is a cross-curricular course that explores complex academic and real-world topics and issues by analyzing divergent perspectives. Using an inquiry framework, students practice reading and analyzing articles, texts, and a variety of media.
Activities: Students to work in teams to identify a problem or issue. The team will conduct research, present their findings, and defend their argument. During Seminar, students will work with a mentor from the faculty or the community to explore their topic from multiple perspectives. Students will also individually investigate an assigned theme, and present and defend the information they gather.
