“At Notre Dame, our global engagement strengthens our research programs, prepares our students to be capable and compassionate leaders, and enhances our Catholic mission.”
Rev. Robert A. Dowd, C.S.C.
University President
Notre Dame is committed to forming students characterized by compassion, justice, and peace, ready to lead lives of hope in action wherever they are. Often a student’s first time out of the country, our award-winning international study abroad programs invite students to engage in global education, cultivate cultural competency, and develop the critical understanding required to engage with complex global challenges.
Summer study abroad experiences are celebrated by students for the depth and breadth of offerings, infrastructure, and programmatic accompaniment before, during, and after the experience.
Through the generous support of the Cavanaugh Council and President’s Circle, Notre Dame students who encounter barriers to participating in the fall and spring have access to transformative summer study abroad experiences, with over 37 programs, including a Global Professional Experience and a Global Research Experience, with new additions in 2026 including Istanbul, Vietnam, and Mexico City.
"Through the Nepal Summer Study Abroad program, I took part in an Energy and Sustainability course with Professor Burns to tackle the engineering challenges of air pollution. By immersing myself in Nepal’s culture and economy, I grounded my technical research in what gives it true meaning: the human dignity of the Nepalese people. Now, as I begin research with the Kathmandu Institute of Applied Sciences at Notre Dame, I am profoundly grateful for the support that allows me to use my engineering skills to serve vulnerable populations, champion human dignity, and develop my potential."

“The Poland Summer Program proved that even thousands of miles away from campus, the Notre Dame community holds true. This was especially important as we studied International Law and Politics of Genocide, or when we were immersed in the history and stories of the people who suffered. Thank you, with all my heart, for supporting the gift of a Notre Dame education, at home and abroad. I am forever grateful.”

"My Summer Study Abroad experience in South Africa opened my eyes to experiences I never could have imagined. Living in the center of a society marked by such extreme disparities forced me to recognize and grapple with my own place within that spectrum. This lifelong challenge of self-awareness and social understanding is something few places prepare you for as well as Notre Dame."
