Project Background and Need:
Many home energy monitors track the usage of appliances but not the quality of power in the home. A low-cost, IoT-based solution could be used by consumers to monitor their power quality and communicate any issues back to the electric utility, which only finds out about these issues after the fact, especially after a grid component has failed. This idea is similar to a call center when a consumer loses power, but instead involves communicating power quality issue information (e.g., voltage sags, spikes, flicker) via low-cost, IoT-based hardware.
Problem Description/requirements:
The project deliverables would include a low end voltage/power meter that communicates wirelessly (e.g., WiFi, cellular) back to the electric utility, the software/code on the meter, and the centralized software system/website that would record all the power quality events, similar to a call center when power is lost. The solution would have to be low-cost ($100 or less preferred) and would have to be capable of providing "last gasp" event information in the case of an outage.
