Project Background and Need:
Developing a proximity and noise sensor/alarm for lumber/construction/outdoor occupations to increase workplace safety in hazardous working environments. Lumber and construction jobs have some of the highest injury/fatality rates and account for many cases of hearing loss. By having a proximity sensor for the workers and the equipment along with a noise sensor, this issues may be mitigated.
Problem Description/requirements (List of high-level functionality you expect to see in the end product):
Product should be able to warn individuals and equipment operators of being "close" and then "dangerously close" to each other. An easy-to-implement design that users can access easily (i.e. clip on to a helmet). Users should be able to understand warnings the device emits. These devices should be removable for versatility. If possible, a noise sensor should be able to indicate various levels of dangerous hearing ranges.
Required Skills / Desired Competencies (in order of importance):
Embedded hardware and programming
Analog circuit design
PCB design and layout
Power electronics and power systems
Networking
Mobile app development
MATLAB and Simulink
Will the students be required to sign any of the following before they start with the project? NDA / CDA / IP assignment / IP protection form
