Project 02: BAY wATCH

Project Background and Need:

Bogue Sound, a coastal lagoon by Morehead City is classified as an "outstanding resource water", which is an official designation given to waterways that have special value ecologically or culturally. It is heavily trafficked by boats using the intracoastal. There is concern that boat wakes may be causing water quality issues. A system to monitor boat traffic in Bogue Sound through imaging to document how boat traffic varies within a day, across seasons, between years is requested. In addition to boat traffic, monitoring of water turbidity will enable a link between changes in turbidity and boat traffic to be established. Access to a dock on Bogue Sound is available to install monitoring equipment.

Problem Description/requirements (List of high-level functionality you expect to see in the end product):

• The product shall be capable of being mounted to a dock on the waterway and measure the speed, direction, boat size and distance from shore of boat traffic.

• The unit shall measure water turbidity close to the unit.

• The unit will record all boat and turbidity data locally and transmit low density data over a network such as wifi (if available).

• LORA (if available) or cellular.

• It might be necessary to power the unit by solar if grid power is not available.
