Teaching can be broken down into tiers. As one moves down the tiered model (starting with 1 going to 3), the services provided become more and more individualized. Tier 1 services are used to teach the majority/all of the study body. Most/all students will receive tier 1 services and an example of a tier 1 service is classroom lessons. Depending on the student's needs and assessments of the uptake of information of tier 1 services, it may be necessary to provide tier 2 services. Tier 2 services are provided to some students, but not all. Students who may need more help beyond tier 1 services may receive tier 2 services and it could take the form of small groups. Students with similar areas of improvement or needed support are provided such support within a smaller group setting. Finally, students who have been identified to need further help may receive tier 3 services. Tier 3 services are provided just to a handful of individuals and should be looked at as temporary in nature (though assessments of student needs will justify if a student no longer needs these services). Tier 3 services may look like individual or one-on-one counseling sessions with the goal to move students back into tier 2 services, then back to tier 1.
