Jon Sandy - Significant Contributor
For over two decades, Jon Sandy served as the athletic trainer at Grand Forks Central High School, becoming a cornerstone of the Knights’ athletic community from August 1995 to October 2017. During his tenure, Jon was a vital part of numerous championship teams, including state titles in hockey and football, and supported countless individual state champions in track, swimming, and wrestling.
Jon’s impact at GFC extended far beyond the training room. From his first day, he was welcomed as family by athletes, coaches, teachers, and administrators—a sentiment he reciprocated through his unwavering dedication and genuine care for every student. His approachability and sense of humor made him a beloved figure, known for his practical jokes that brought laughter and camaraderie to the teams. Whether swapping stories with Coach Berg on bus rides or sharing lighthearted moments with student managers like David Wilprecht, Jon’s presence was a source of joy and support.
Jon’s commitment to GFC athletics often meant long hours and late nights, but he credits his wife, Tristen—a GFC graduate herself—as the rock of their family. Together, they raised three children: Bailey, Nathan, and Grace, all of whom spent countless hours in the GFC training room, further entwining the Sandy family with the school’s legacy.
After leaving GFC, Jon continued his career in athletic training, spending 6 years in Minot as an ATC with Trinity Health and the last 3 years with Sanford in Fargo primarily covering Kindred HS. Yet, his fondest memories remain rooted in the relationships and experiences at Central—the extended family he found among the maroon and gray.
Jon Sandy’s induction into the GFC Hall of Fame honors not only his professional achievements but also the spirit of community, mentorship, and fun he brought to generations of Knights athletes.
