Matt was a leader on the field and off for Grand Forks Central. He was a four-time letter winner as a thrower on the Track and Field team and a three-time letter winner on the Knights’ Football team. While competing on the football field, Matt played linebacker. At that position he was twice named All-Conference and participated in the Shrine Bowl. Though his time on the gridiron was successful, another field was where he really set himself apart was in throwing events. As a junior Matt was runner up at State in the Javelin throw. As a senior, he placed 4th in the shot, 2nd in the discus and claimed the state title in the javelin. Matt still holds the javelin record at Grand Forks Central with his throw of 195’6”. When asked what sets GFC apart from other schools he attributed the difference in the “amazing coaching staff and school pride.”

After high school, Matt took his throwing talent to the University of North Dakota. While throwing for the Fighting Sioux, Matt competed in 2 National Championships, placing in the top 8, and earning All-American status both years. The highlight was during his senior year at the National meet where he won the 2008 NCAA Division II National Champion in javelin.

Matt is currently an air traffic controller in Grand Forks.  He lives in Grand Forks with his wife Natae, and their three children Mason(10), Parker(8) and Hadley(3). Matt would like to thank his family for all of the support and for encouraging him to be in athletics.
