Cassie's Induction Ceremony
If you have spent any time as a thrower with the Grand Forks Throwing crew since 1979, you will have heard many stories regarding former athletes. Of those athlete stories, there are only a few that can be associated with a thrower by just their first name and Cassie is one of those throwers. Cassie was a discus thrower and shot putter competing for Grand Forks Central from 1993-1996.
During her career there were many stories that went along with each of the following performances in this extensive list of accomplishments - 1993 North Dakota State Track and Field discus 3rd place, 1994 North Dakota State Track and Field discus 2nd place and shot put 2nd place, 1995 North Dakota State Track and Field discus 2nd place and shot put 1st place, 1996 North Dakota State Track and Field discus 1st place and shot put 1st place, 1992 AAU Jr. Olympic National Games discus 3rd place, 1993 AAU Jr. Olympic National Games discus 2nd place, 1994 AAU Jr. Olympic National Games discus 6th place and shot put 1st place, 1995 AAU Jr. Olympic National Games discus 2nd place and finally in 1996 at the AAU Jr. Olympic National Games 1st place in the discus and 1st place in the shot put.
With the performances just listed, you can imagine there would be another substantial list of the awards that traveled with Cassie - 1993 Most Improved field GFC girls Track & Field; 1995 MVP- Field GFC Girls Track & Field, 1996 MVP-Throws GFC Girls Track & Field, 1996 Track and Field North Dakota State Gatorade Player of the Year, 1996 Grand Forks Optimist Club Octagon Award recognition of outstanding performance and leadership in girls Track & Field, 1996 US Army Reserve Scholar Athlete Award, 1995 Track and Field News High School All American, 1996 Track and Field News High School All American. With all of those accolades, Cassie received a full academic and athletic scholarship to Stanford University.
When asked what are the significant memories of her time at GFC, Cassie said, “I absolutely loved the opportunities, competition, and friendships that resulted from the athletic process. GFC provided an environment for me to explore other interests and to be creative. I am so thankful for all of the different learning opportunities I got to participate in. Some of my favorites were the following - German language, art, band (playing the flute and piccolo), AP English (field trip to the cities to see plays!), anatomy and physiology. One of my most favorite things I got to do at GFC was be in the pit band for the musical Mame.”
Cassie currently lives in Grand Forks with her son Roman and daughter Aryanna. She received her Master’s Degree in 2021 and is currently working towards licensure to become a licensed professional clinical counselor.
