Throughout the year in HWB assessments come thick and fast. It's key to get organised and ready for this assessment period with the university wide move to online assessment. Making sure certain things are correct and knowing where to get help will make everything run smoothly. Consider these three aspects of your online assessment.
All summative submission points at task and sub task level in Blackboard will be auto created for you if you inputted your assessment data before the 13/07/2018 for Academic year 18/19. These will be created around the second week in September before semester 1 starts. If unfortunately you did not manage to input your assessment data before 13/07/2018 you will have to manually create your blackboard submission point yourself.
Consider the aspects below when setting up your submission points.
In HWB we advise that your submission points are set to unlimited and the last attempt is to be marked. Students will gain no advantage from submitting multiple times but will be able to rectify any mistakes they have made in the submission without the need of admin teams.
Submission points should be left open for seven weeks after the deadline to allow the submission of extensions and IMR. All submissions will therefore fall into the same grade centre column allowing for efficient marks transfer and a single submission point for students. It is imperative that there is a due date set on the assignment as this will be the link that indicates in a student's blackboard calendar and to do list when a submission deadline is. To avoid feedback going through to students in drips and drabs you need to hide the grade centre column for that assignment in grade centre. Once all feedback for students is completed the column can then be shown to students and this will release all marks and feedback. These will be the settings of your automatically created submission point.
For the capping report to work with students on your module, you will need to make sure SITS data and blackboard data align identically. Automatically created submission points will be created from SITS data and will therefore be identical. If you wish to change the submission point please contact your local helpdesk team with the proposed changes as they will be able to update this in the SITS system.
For extensions and IMR save any feedback and grades as draft until all of that group i.e 5 day extensions, 10 day extensions and IMR are completed. You can then go through and submit the drafts to release all of extension submissions in a cluster rather than at interspersed intervals.
Please find a guide to all blackboard and Turnitin settings and visit the Turnitin section of the website to find more about it's advised use.
If you do not feel this submission point management will work for you, please contact ! HWB TEL to discuss your concern.
Clear instructions are key to making online assessment work. There are a lot of little details that if left out could cause confusion for students. The HWB TEL team have created an example module site. In this is a section on assessment showing an example of clear instructions to students. Please feel free to copy these instructions over to your blackboard sites and submission points
Please find a link to the HWB example module site, this will give you all the information around how to clearly instruct your students. If you are not yet enrolled on the HWB example module site, please get in touch with! HWB TEL. Please Note: you must be logged into shuspace to access the example site links.
Make sure you have taken time to understand the different marking and feedback tools and taken note of what can work best for you.
Policy states that feedback must be delivered back to students no later than 15 working days after the deadline, so being prepared is key.
Some of the marking technologies will require training and support. The faculty TEL team are available to provide 1to1 support on all things assessment and can also do group sessions if you have a group of markers all wanting to use the same thing.
Please see the Faculty guidance on Word and Duration limits below.
