Book vs. Movie: The Outsiders
By Miranda Vargas
The Outsiders is a great book and movie. They have many similarities and differences. When I think about how Hinton, the author, described the characters in the book, their appearance seems pretty similar to how they look in the movie. For example in the book, Darry is described as tall, muscular, dark-brown hair, tough, cool, and smart. These characteristics match Darry in the movie. In the book, Hinton described Dallas with blonde hair, almost white, and with icy blue eyes. However, in the movie, he had light brown hair and his eyes were brown. When Hinton described the situations/events in the book, they matched well. For example, in the beginning of the book, Ponyboy was walking back from the movies and then got jumped by a few Socs in a red Corvair. The same exact event happened in the movie. The character development was good in the movie and book, therefore, I did not have a favorite character from either version. I also disliked the Socs from both. If they ever make an updated version of the movie, I think it would be cool because a lot of people like watching a sequel or a remake of an older movie. Overall, my favorite version is the book. I enjoyed reading The Outsiders because it describes how the characters felt and books always give more detail.

Most Influential Presidents
By Imani Royal
We have had many presidents over time, but there are three that I believe to have had the most impact on Americans. This article will provide a brief overview of each of their lives as well as what made them influential.
Abraham “Abe” Lincoln was born on February 12th, 1809. Abraham was the middle child of the family. Abraham grew up in poverty; he would do farm chores, hard work, and reading by the light of the fireplace until he was about 17. Lincoln was self-taught and soon afterwards became a lawyer in 1836. His political career consisted of him being the Whig Party leader from 1834 to 1840, being Illinois’s state legislator from 1834 to 1842, and being the U.S. Representative from March 4th, 1847 to March 3, 1849. Abraham became president of the United States on March 4th, 1861. While Abe and his wife Mary were at a theater to see a play, shots were heard. Abraham sadly passed away at the age of 56 on April 15th, 1865. Abraham was survived by his two sons and wife.
Abraham was a very inspirational man even in death. Before he died, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation that declared slaves forever free within the Confederacy on January 1st, 1863. He successfully waged a political struggle and civil war that preserved the Union, ended slavery, and created the possibility of civil and social freedom for African-Americans. Abraham Lincoln built the Republican Party into a strong, national organization. He rallied most of the northern Democrats to the Union cause. The Emancipation Proclamation just amplified the start of the Civil Rights Movement and became a reason that people kept working towards equality and Lincoln always made sure that he allowed everyone to be treated as equals. Abraham Lincoln will always be remembered as a pioneer for positive change.
John Fitzgerald Kennedy “JFK” was born on May 29th, 1917 in Brookline, Massachusetts. After he graduated from Choate Preparatory, he entered Harvard University in 1936. After John graduated from Harvard, he joined the Navy at age 24. Five years later, he decided to run for the U.S. House of Representatives from a working class district of Boston. He was elected the President of the United States from January 20th, 1961 to November 22nd, 1963. As president, he fought to ensure equal rights and opportunities for all Americans, no matter the skin color. On November 21st, 1953, JFK flew into Texas to give political speeches. Sadly, on November 22nd, 1963, as JFK, his wife, and his entourage of people were driving down a very excited road in Texas among thousands of people, shots rang out. Less than 12 hours later, John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, had been pronounced dead at the Parkland Memorial Hospital at the age of 46. He was survived by his wife and their two small children.
Even though JFK passed, he still inspired our nation and government. In the days after his assassination, his vice president Lyndon B. Johnson, took office. Lyndon had his goals set on fulfilling what John’s wishes were for the nation. John, at the time of his untimely death, was planning on signing into effect the Civil Rights Act of 1963. The Civil Rights Act of 1963 would provide protection for every American’s right to vote under the US government, end segregation in public facilities, and require public schools to be integrated. This in turn, upset many people, which really defined racism as not just a government issue, but as a moral issue. Additionally, he challenged the nation to reach for the impossible and land a man on the moon before the end of a decade. John influenced generations to accept responsibility for their government and their world, by taking political and economic/social action. He encouraged his fellow Americans to lift up those less fortunate than themselves. John F. Kennedy was a very significant man to our history and he changed the lives of many Americans.
Lyndon Baines Johnson, “LBJ,” was born on August 27th, 1908. He was the first child of Sam Ealy Johnson Jr. and Rebekah Baines Johnson. As a child, Johnson was an indifferent student, but eagerly pursued extracurricular activities such as journalism, student government, and debate. While Lyndon was teaching, he learned compassion for the poverty of others when he taught students of Mexican descent. LBJ became the 37th vice president from 1961 to 1963. Soon after Kennedy had passed, Johnson became the 36th president of the United States and immediately carried out the Civil Rights agenda. He signed into effect the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which protected voting rights, guaranteed access to public accommodations, and allowed the withholding of federal income from programs that had discriminatory practices. He was the president from November 22nd, 1963 to January 20th, 1969. He served one full term. When Lyndon left office, peace talks were underway. He did not live to see them successfully completed due to his sudden passing of a heart attack at his Texas ranch on January 22nd, 1973. Lyndon was survived by his wife and their two daughters.
LBJ’s civil rights legacy is the reason that we do not have to protest for our rights and are free to use the same public facilities as everyone else. He worked to make sure that all people were treated equally in America and that people who discriminated against others were punished. He passed acts that protected voting and civil rights. Johnson even passed an act that established the OEO (The Office of Economic Opportunity) which currently oversees a number of educational, training, and employment programs. Johnson made sure to incorporate more safeguards for civil and voting rights, funding for education, programs for urban renewal, medicare, crime prevention, and consumer protection. The biggest act he passed that got him a lot of recognition was the Civil Rights Act. LBJ was a very inspirational man and he is forever to be considered the man who gave people civil freedom.

College on my Mind
By Carli McMillen
Even though we are still in middle school, some of you may be thinking about college already like me. I researched some facts about colleges near us to learn more before we have to make that decision in high school. The three schools on my list were Purdue Northwest, Indiana University Northwest (IUN), and Governors State University(GSU). Purdue Northwest is located in Hammond, IN. Indiana Northwest is located in Gary, IN. Governors State is located in University Park, IL.
The schools have many similarities and differences. Some things they have in common are a large amount of degree choices. Purdue Northwest and IUN have seventy degrees a student can pick from while Governors State has eighty-five degrees that a student can choose. They also have a lot of land. Indiana Northwest has a forty-two acre campus while Purdue Northwest has nearly 25,00 acres of land. For all of the colleges, I was not able to find the percent of first generation students attending college. Each school has also received some awards. Purdue University was awarded the Book of Great Teachers. IUN got an award for being a Minority and Hispanic Serving Institution. Governors State was awarded the Best College Short Film.
Unlike GSU, IUN and Purdue have main campuses outside of Northwest Indiana. The main campus for Purdue is in West Lafayette, IN and the main campus for Indiana University Northwest is in Bloomington, IN. There are many other differences. Indiana University Northwest has an acceptance rate of 89.9%, Purdue Northwest has an acceptance rate of 38%, and Governors State has an acceptance rate of 48%. Governors State has a tuition calculator on their website to figure out a student’s cost. Indiana Northwest has a tuition rate around $8,400 for in-state students while Purdue Northwest has a tuition rate of about $9,500 for Indiana residents. Indiana Northwest and Governors State’s most popular major is business whereas Purdue's most popular major is nursing. There are several notable graduates from each college including musicians, politicians, and scientists, but GSU has one you might know. Chicago Fire and Prison Break actress DuShon Monique Brown graduated from Governors State.
In my opinion, I would like to go to Purdue simply because it has a larger campus and it is harder to get into. Meaning that it would have to be a goal for me to keep my grades up to go to that college. Overall, I think all the colleges are great in their own way.

Spider-Man: The Beginning
By Annabel Cheney
Spider-Man; the well loved superhero, wasn’t always popular and it took many years for people to come around to him. The creation of Spider-Man began in August of 1962, when Stan Lee published Amazing Fantasy #15. This was the first comic book to introduce Spider-Man. Unlike most superheroes, Spider-Man was an average teenager and not some muscle-man. Martin Goodman, Stan Lee’s boss at the time, wasn’t so sure about Spider-Man. Goodman said that superheroes couldn’t be teens, or have a personal lives because it would take the attention away from the superhero itself. Stan Lee ended up publishing Spider-Man anyways, with the help of Steve Ditko. Steve Ditko was the artist for Spider-Man; he was hired after Jack Kirby was fired for not getting the right idea about Spider-Man. Spider-Man gained fans very quickly, with his popularity rising everywhere! The difference between Spider-Man and other superheroes was that Spider-Man was nerdy, had the real problems of a teen, and was a relatable character to all ages. This made Spider-Man become a hit. In conclusion, Spider-man came to be from the one and only comic edition, Amazing Fantasy #15, becoming the hit superhero loved today.

The Big Fight
By Landon Lee
The Jake Paul and Mike Tyson fight took place on Friday Nov. 15 in Arlington, Texas. Around the world, about 65 million people streamed the fight on Netflix. Mike Tyson is known for being the former undisputed heavyweight world champion in boxing as well as some troubling issues that were known to the public. He was born on June 30, 1966. He made a name for himself after winning his first 19 professional fights by knockout. This earned him his first belt at age 20. The youngest boxer ever to win a heavyweight title is a record Tyson also possesses. While Jake Paul is a former YouTuber who only started boxing in 2018. His professional boxing career began in 2020 when he faced the former basketball player Nate Robinson and MMA fighters Ben Askren, Tryon Woodley, and Anderson Silva.
In the beginning of this legendary fight, Mike Tyson was doing decently for his age while Jake Paul seemed like he was trying to wear him out. Later on, Tyson began getting slower. Jake was throwing more landing punches throughout the entire fight. About mid-fight Tyson began to bite on his glove and began taking more punches than he was throwing. In the end, Mike Tyson lost via unanimous decision. Most people who saw the fight thought of it as disappointing and overly marketed. Some even believe that the fight was staged. Since there was a leaked script of the fight that seemed to show mostly what happened during the fight. Overall, this fight seemed to be more of a marketing thing and very disappointing.
