8th Grade Art Hallway Review
by: Destiny Young
Upstairs, there is a hallway covered with art. That hallway is Mrs. Johnsen’s; she’s the 8th grade art teacher. On one side of the hallway, it’s covered with her new classes' names done artistically. Some are made with perspective and others are abstract; it’s quite a variety. I love this part of the hallway because it showcases the diversity of the uniqueness of the students in Mrs. Johnsen’s class. It tells a part of each student's personalities and stories. Now, on the other side of the hallway, it’s supposed to showcase the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance began during the 1920s and ended in the mid 1930s. This was actually a movement to revive African American culture such as music, art, fashion, literature, theater, education, and the like. I believe that black excellence should be celebrated whether it’s Black History Month or not, but the Harlem Renaissance hasn’t been talked about enough. This was a powerful movement in Black History and deserves to be talked about so I’m delighted that Mrs. Johnsen has chosen such a soul-stirring time period.
Students from Mrs. Johnsen’s classes have put up their work and it’s phenomenal. Each and every student has put effort into the art pieces to showcase Black culture. The students used paper with African patterns on them, colorful feathers, the Pan African colors, and their own drawing skills. Mrs. Johnsen even put up words like integrity, empower, and such. I love the use of everyone’s projects because it connects to the Harlem Renaissance’s use of multiple artists, poets, musicians, and activists. Mrs. Johnsen encouraged and empowered her students to put their creativity on paper not only because of Black History Month but also for her to bring attention to the Harlem Renaissance.
Marvel vs DC Poll and Article
by: Imani Royal
Magazine publisher, Martin Goodman created Marvel (formerly Timely Comics). Timely
Comics was created in 1939. First comic that was released by the company was called: ‘Marvel Comics #1’. Timely changed its name in 1961. In 1937, Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson along with Jack Liebowitz founded DC. By 1938, Superman became a hit with ‘Action Comics #1’. DC debuted Catwoman 2 years after Superman became a hit. By then, Marvel and DC were already battling. Marvel’s Black Cat leapt onto the scene in the ‘70s. Marvel’s Iron Man made his debut in 1963. DC introduced Red Rocket in 1987. While Iron Man had many starring roles, Red Rocket was soon forgotten about. DC’s Darkseid arrived in 1970. In 1973, Marvel artist Jim Starlin created Thanos. Both characters were giant demigods who wanted to destroy the universe. Marvel and DC are still the biggest publishers in comic books.
My personal opinion is that Marvel is better than DC. The storylines are more interesting and less repetitive. Marvel is better than DC because the heroes are easier to understand. There’s no long story about why they are the way they are now. The heroes are also easy to get into and easier to pay attention to when reading or watching their individual storylines.
Mrs. Lowe says that she grew up in the DC era and that she is very fond of Batman, Superman, Catwoman, Wonder Woman, Joker, and etc. These were the superheroes that she grew up with. Mr. Gordon says DC because,“Batman is the best.” Ms. Barber says Marvel since she likes Iron Man because he’s likable and highly intelligent. Gabriel Hughes says Marvel because the characters are more interesting. Zariah Townes says DC because it’s more interesting than Marvel.

Top 4 Appropriate Animes
by David Mihal
“Ouran Highschool Host Club” - TV series
Castle in the Sky - movie
Suzume - movie
Howl's Moving Castle - movie
My number 4 pick is Suzume, an amazing movie from the year 2023. I would rate this movie a 4 out of 5. Suzume was really good with stunning graphics and an amazing storyline expressing the idea of moving on and not being able to change your choices. It gets points deducted for not being on a streaming service yet and being 2 hours long. Feels the same in sub and dub.
My number 3 pick is Howl’s Moving Castle. Also a 4 out of 5 watch. Howl’s Moving Castle shows the fear of aging while traveling with Howl on his moving castle. It shows how talents of every kind can benefit everybody. Points deducted again because it has filler in the movie. This movie comes to theaters every now and then. Way better in sub.
My number 2 is “Ouran Highschool Host Club” This romance was made in 2005. An easy 5 out of 5. This anime is not for the weak; a fun slowburn that could not have been any faster paced. It is very entertaining with a funny main character. They also tease season 2 every single year so maybe the story is not over? The dub has way more effort put into it over the sub. Sadly it is on Hulu now after being sold by Netflix.
My number 1 is Castle in the Sky. Another easy 5 out of 5. It is an older movie following the adventure of a boy and girl on a journey up through the clouds to defeat the evil castle in the sky. It is very funny with many in-depth characters. Honestly, the story is better in dub. It sometimes comes to the movies every now and then, but normally stays at home on HBO Max.

Winter Formal Review
by Carli McMillen
Pierce Middle School had a Winter Formal on February 15, 2024. The decorations in my opinion were charming and very fitting to the theme which was winterfest with the white and blue balloons. Kendall Mellon said the decorations were fine, but they could have been better because it wasn’t very creative. Neveah Thomas said the decorations were nice and very well planned. There was also a 360° photo booth that everyone enjoyed and it was free. The DJ played many well known songs like “Low” by Flo Rida and “Single Ladies” by Beyoncé. Kendall thinks they should have played slow songs for the people in relationships since it was a valentines/winter dance. Neveah said she liked what the DJ played because it was a mix of newer and older songs. As for the food, I did not try any. However, Neveah said the food was good, but could have used improvements, especially the cookies. Kendall said she would rate this dance a 9/10. Neveah said she would rate this dance a 7/10. I rate the dance a 10/10 because it was very fun and creative.
