History of Pierce Middle School
By Malia Arce
Every school has a history to it and Clifford Pierce Middle School has an interesting past. According to the Merrillville Historical Society, Pierce was originally on the same site of the old high school that used to be named after President Harding in 1927. Although, in October of 1928, the high school had burned down. Over time, a new high school was formed, which then ended up being Merrillville High School. In time, the construction for our middle school came along too. Our school’s name is also based on a real person, Clifford Pierce. He was an individual who had been dedicated to the school corporation as both a janitor and a bus driver for many years. His commitment led to him being remembered in Merrillville history, which then made his name became the foundation of our school. Pierce Middle School has an interesting history. While there isn’t too much to the school’s past, there is still a sufficient amount of knowledge that can be acquired surrounding the institution.

Top Cafeteria Meals
By Autumn Underwood
School lunches have changed over the years. Most students complain about how grim they are, but some students enjoy the food that is served. They are satisfied with most choices such as chicken sandwiches and pizza. Most lunches aren't enjoyed as much as others because of the bland taste and the lack of options. Students also often complain about having cold, dry lunches. Additionally, those students feel that the food that is served doesn't taste like actual food and is considered “mystery meat” because of the way it smells, feels, and tastes. Despite the negative thoughts about some meals, there are still favorites. Below is a list of the top six lunches with their ratings and reasons for those ratings.
Lasagna 10/10:
Lasagna was rated 10/10 because when it is served, it is warm
It smells and looks good before it is given out
It is also flavorful
Spicy Chicken Sandwich 10/10:
Spicy chicken sandwiches are my favorite because I like spicy food and so do a lot of other students
It is cooked well and warm
It is also juicy and mouth watering
Buffalo Chicken Chips 8/10: (Many students call this meal Tater Tot Salad)
It is always served warm and with a cinnamon stick
It has a little kick to it which many people like
When it is given to students, they have choices for what they want on it
Bosco Sticks 7.5/10:
Most students like the way they taste
Pizza 7/10:
Pizza was only given a 7 because sometimes it’s served cold or it’s dry
Nachos 6/10:
Nachos received a 6 because they aren't the best, but are still good enough to get above a 5

New Book Review
By Aowen Kiel
I reviewed the book The Clackity by Lora Senf. It is a thriller, ghost story, and paranormal fiction. At the beginning of the novel, it dragged to get to the action. It picked up when Evie, the main character, had a confrontation with another character. Evie is a normal character that is a typical teenager. Aunt Desdemonda is also a very neutral character. She is like any other aunt, loving and caring to her niece. They had a really good bond for being relatives. Both were really simple, put together characters. My favorite characters were the three witch sisters; they all had unique and distinctive personalities and character traits. For example, one sister had a mother-like personality, very strict and hard with what she said. Another sister had a very bubbly and energetic personality. The Clackity was also another character that I liked because of the way he talked. He talked smoothly and had charm. The adventure along the way was interesting as Evie had to make her way through all seven peculiar houses. Each one of the houses resembled houses she was familiar with. This frequent change in setting made the story more suspenseful. The climax wasn't that surprising, but it was good. The ending wasn't left hanging and everything was resolved. I give the book 8/10 stars, taking two points off because of the slow beginning.
Cost to Pay
Short Story
By Aria Johnson
“I can’t believe we got plane tickets to Miami. They were super cheap too,” I say as we get to our gate.“Right, this airline is relatively new, so let's see how this works out,” my friend Maya says as we enter the plane. “HI THERE TRAVELER!” A flight attendant says with a big smile. She startled Maya and I as we gave her a smile. Maya and I soon notice we’re alone. No one else but the flight attendants and us boarded the plane. “Are you sure about this?” Maya says as she sits down in her seat as we are sitting in the very back. “Calm down Maya,” I say as I get my neck pillow set up and put on my seatbelt. The pilot then goes on the intercom, “GOOD! AFTERNOON PASSENGERS!” He sounded like a crazy person as it felt like his mouth was on the mic and was very loud. “OW! That guy needs to lay off the mic!” I say as Maya and I cover our ears. "I'll say this right now, NO ONE is that happy all the time. Something wasn’t right." Maybe Maya had a point, but there’s no turning back now. We then start to take off. Maybe it wasn’t so bad. Maybe it was just a bad impression. For about a half hour everything was going smoothly. As the flight attendants gave us drinks, I quickly spit it out. “PFFFT! WHAT WAS THAT?!” We both said in unison. “Water,” The flight attendant says. “Where from?!” “From our very clean toilets,” she says. My eyes widened. “FROM THE TOILET?! What kind of place is this?!” I say. “The type of place where you pay 3 dollars for a plane trip to Egypt,” she says. “Egypt?!” We both say once again unison. “But, the tickets said Miami.” “Oh, well, that was a typo. We’re going to Egypt.” “Well, how long is the ride to Egypt?” Maya asks. “13 hours.” We don’t even say anything as the flight attendant leaves. “This is what we get for buying cheap tickets,” Maya says. “Indeed, real cost to pay huh?” I say as I hold my head down.
