Fine Arts

Each Mt. Vernon graduate must complete 1 credit of Fine Arts. The following classes can be taken in order to satisfy the Fine Arts graduation requirement:

Course Descriptions

Art 1

Art 1 is a full year course designed for a first year art student. Provides instruction over art elements and principles of design, basic techniques, application of various mediums, proper use of equipment and safety in the art room. Students will have work displayed in art show.

Pre-Requisites: None

Art 2

Art 2 is a full year course to provide further instruction in the elements and principles of design. Students will be exposed to new art materials, various mediums, techniques for drawings and paintings.

Pre-Requisites: Art 1


Art 3

Art 3 is an advanced class offered to juniors or seniors who have completed Art 2, who wish to pursue their interest in art. Independent student encourages students to explore new ideas and areas of interest. Must complete 3 projects per term (8 weeks) 6 projects per semester. Students will show their work and assist with exhibits.

Pre-Requisites: Art 1, 2


Art 4

Art 4 is an advanced class offered to juniors or seniors who have completed Art 3, who wish to pursue their interest in art. Independent student encourages students to explore new ideas and areas of interest. Must complete 3 projects per term (8 weeks) 6 projects per semester. Students will show their work and assist with exhibits, develop a portfolio and apply for scholarships.

Pre-Requisites: Art 3, unless signed up for 3 & 4 the same year.


Design ½

Design is a semester class allowing students to become familiar with a variety of methods, media and equipment. Students will work with fibers, mirrors, spray paint, painted shoes and jewelry.

Sculpture ½

Sculpture is a semester class designed to introduce students to sculptural forms 2-D and 3-D.Students will use special tools, techniques and methods of sculptural processes executed by hand.

Pre-Requisites: Art 1


Ceramics 1 ½

Semester course allowing students to explore various aspects of creating utilitarian art forms. Students will learn how to create functional or non-functional pottery using various techniques for hand building and wheel throwing in clay. Students will have opportunity to do Raku firing. Must submit at least 4 pieces for shows.

Ceramics 2 ½

Semester course allowing students to explore various aspects of creating utilitarian art forms. Students will learn how to create functional or non-functional pottery using various techniques for hand building and wheel throwing in clay. Students will learn how to load and unload kilns and have an opportunity to do Raku firing. Must submit at least 4 pieces for shows.

Black & White Photography ½

Photo I is a semester class designed to introduce students on how to use a manual 35 MM Film Camera and its functions so they are familiar with terms and equipment. Students will work independently to take own photos, develop film, and prints in a darkroom.

Black & White Photography 2 ½

Photo 2 is a semester class designed for the advanced photography student. Allows students to further develop skills, initiate creative technique and increase knowledge of 35 MM Film camera. Students will select topics to photograph.

Sculpture 1/2

Sculpture introduces students to the creation of 2-D and 3-D forms. Students will use special tools, techniques and methods of sculptural processes that are executed by hand.

Advanced Drawing 1/2

Semester course designed for the advanced art student for development of art skills and knowledge of various mediums that can be used to create drawings. Student will be given chance to experiment with personal ideas and expression.

Vocal Motion Show Choir

We will Learn various music of various styles and perform throughout the year at competitions and community performances.

Pre-Requisites: Audition


Velocity Show Choir

We will learn various music of various styles and perform throughout the year at competitions and community performances.

Pre-Requisites: Audition

Concert Choir

We learn about vocal technique and basic music theory as well as perform music of different styles. We perform throughout the year at various community events and school concerts.

Band

Students will use a variety of musical materials to develop each individual’s proficiency on an assigned musical instrument (s). These materials include but are not limited to marching band music, pep band music, solo music, small ensemble music, and technique studies. Students will be required to meet outside the school day as needed.

Guitars & More

Guitar and more offers guitar instruction for basic levels. Students will also be instructed in basic music theory to understand how music works. We will also study how music literature has progressed from the Middle Ages to the music of today with and in-depth focus on the composers and styles of music throughout ... Guitar will be a large part of the course. Students are welcome to bring in their own acoustic guitars, however the school district cannot be responsible for their care.

Drama

Drama is set as an intro to theater. Students study theater history, acting, improv, set design, costume design, and makeup design. They learn stage and theater and what it takes to produce a play. It is meant as an introduction, so each topic of theater is touched on lightly with the intent of intense focus in the advanced courses.

Advanced Drama - Stagecraft

Stagecraft is a study of construction and design techniques for the stage. Students will work on construction of the sets for upcoming productions and actively participate in the design of each production. There will be days where they must go the Marc to work on productions. This course includes painting, drawing, construction and power tool use.

Pre-Requisites: Drama 1 or approval by instructor

Advanced Drama - Acting

Advanced drama is an acting emphasis course. We will attend and participate in competitions at other schools. We study acting methods, present monologues, acting scenes, directing scenes, duets, improve and video editing.

Pre-Requisites: Drama 1 or approval from instructor.
