Materials for Language Teachers and Learners
After attending the 2019 ACTFL Convention, I reflected on the many sessions I attended and the knowledge I gained from each one. I thought about how I could improve my teaching and how I could incorporate new methods and activities into my classroom. The most salient message at the conference was that language teachers should be focusing on helping students to show what they can actually do with the target language. This idea was echoed even more when I attended a session about Integrated Performance Assessments (IPAs). These assessments use the three modes of communication to allow students to show what they can do with the language. This inspired me to want to learn more about IPAs and assessing my students in a more authentic and performance-based way. Therefore, for my activity design assignment, I created an IPA over a unit that I currently teach in my Spanish 1 class. Going through the process of creating an IPA has given me a better understanding of the kinds of materials and resources students should be exposed to and the kinds of tasks they should be doing. I feel much more confident in my abilities to create my own assessments in this manner and I plan to implement IPAs throughout my entire curriculum. Attached below is the outline and description of the IPA I created, along with the actual assessment itself.
