Below is a video of a lesson I taught in Spring 2022 with one of my Spanish 2 classes. These students are in 8th-10th grade (approximately 13-16 years old) and have approximately Novice-High/Intermediate-Low proficiency levels. We had just finished reading a class novel titled ¿Dónde está Eduardo? the previous class, so this lesson was aimed to review the entire book in preparation for the upcoming assessment.
The learning objectives for the lesson:
Students will be able to...
Describe the main characters of a novel using words, phrases & short sentences
Identify characters based on quotes
Explain how the main character changed throughout the book
Put the main events of a plot in chronological order in order to summarize a novel using short sentences
Summary
We began class with a Pear Deck presentation in which students matched descriptions and quotes to the appropriate character from the book. This activity shows how I use technological tool to enhance instruction. I can see on my Pear Deck dashboard each student's response and can quickly identify questions that were challenging for the whole class. I ask follow-up questions and ask that students add each description or quote to their note-catcher while we complete the Pear Deck together. The note-catcher will later serve as an excellent resource to use while studying for the assessment.
Next, students work in pairs to complete a T-chart to describe how the main character changed from the beginning to the end of the book. The T-chart has sentence starters to support student writing in comparing before and after.
Finally, students complete a Gallery Walk in which they read eight important plot events around the room and later have to put them in chronological order. They do this by numbering and writing each event on a map to show where each part of the book took place. When they finish they have a summary of the most important parts of the book as a visual representation on the map. Again, this will be a great resource to review the book.
