Spanish AP Language and Culture:
Developing a unit to target Reading and Comprehension Strategies
Spanish AP Language and Culture students may not necessarily enter this class equipped with all the tools they need to succeed at a college level. To address this, I decided to design a course following the School Board guidelines but incorporating literacy theory and ICC (Intercultural Communicative Competence) to assist students in achieving their two main goals: using language for enjoyment and passing the AP test.
The project consists of three main parts. First, I created a course description and a curriculum grid for the class. The second part involved developing a unit template to ensure that all necessary components are included. This template was then utilized to create Unit 1. Finally, through research, I identified some of the most important strategies for teaching reading and comprehension, and I compiled them into a chart. The chart serves as a tool to help students identify and address language gaps, promoting greater independence in their learning process.
In summary, this project aims to provide Spanish AP Language and Culture students with the support and resources they need to thrive in the course, enabling them to enjoy using the language and excel in the AP test.
