The video below shows a lesson from one of my high school French I courses filmed in May 2023. Nearing the end of one full year of French study, these students generally interact at a Novice-Mid proficiency level. This lesson reinforced many topics from earlier study, including expressing likes and dislikes, sentence negation, and school-related vocabulary. New topics being introduced include pet vocabulary and the verb to have (avoir). The students can be heard expressing how they feel about familiar topics like foods and animals, what they have in their possession, and what they do not have.

This lesson involved a combination of interpersonal speaking and interpretive listening. Students were engaged in a full class discussion, introduction of new vocabulary, and small group talk time, largely conducted in the target language (French.) The end of the lesson also involved some written grammar skill revision on a printed worksheet targeting the forms we had used in the discussions.
In order to aid student comprehension while using the target language, I made use of images, motions, and gestures, and reframed questions as needed. To scaffold the written work, I guided students toward supporting materials, such as verb conjugation songs (memory aid) and conjugation charts (projected on the board.) Although I tried to stay in frame for the majority of the video, I did also circulate around the room in order to engage the full class and discourage off-task behaviors, further supported by my use of eye contact and calling on students by name.
