If an online tool is a) educationally valuable, b) does not require student accounts, c) has no advertising and d) is free for educator use, you do not need to get it approved.
If it is indicated that students need parent permission to use a tool, you can use this permission slip template with your students. Template Link
At times the evaluated digital resource will be approved for students of a certain age (e.g. parent permission for <13). This means that in order to use this digital resource the building must attain permission. Below is the process for doing that:
Request the use of the digital resource to the CIA Director and the building principal.
By agreeing, the building principal is taking on the responsibility of overseeing the process of acquiring parent permission from parents, tracking to ensure that all students' permissions are received, and monitoring to ensure that all new students are included in permission. Given the diligence that is required to ensure compliance, it is recommended that this process is only used for digital resources that are seen as powerful and essential tools.
The building principal and educator would receive the district permission form from the IT Director which includes the appropriate language to communicate with families what they are providing permission for and the limits of the district in monitoring the content.
The building principal and educator would seek parental permission prior to implementing the digital resource.
The building principal and educator would monitor the permission responses and ensure that the process is tracked for compliance.
Opt-Out List (Parental Consent)
The following technology tools have been evaluated and align with McMinnville School District's academic and technology needs and meet the requirements for federal laws such as the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Many approved tools still require parent permission for students under a certain age. These tools have been added to an 'Opt-out List' which is communicated to parents quarterly. Parents must actively opt their child out of using all of these tools by contacting the district office. Unless staff has been notified by the district office, parents have given consent at the indicated grade levels. Teachers will be notified if a student cannot use the following tools. Please note, these are not part of our curriculum adoption; these are extra resources that may be used in classrooms by teachers making professional decisions.
Requests to have new technology resources approved for students and/or staff will be reviewed once per quarter.
