Even- A counting number is even if it is divisible by 2, if there is no remainder after the number has been divided by 2.
Odd- A counting number is odd if it is not divisible by 2, if there is a remining amount after being divided by 2.
How can you tell if a really large number is even or odd without dividing it by 2? You can look at the very last number all the way to the right.
You can conclude that if the number in the ones place ends in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 then it will be an odd number and if it ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 than it will be an even number.
To understand identifying even and odd numbers, place value concepts must be mastered. Large numbers can also become overwhelming even though the concepts are the same no matter the size of the counting number. Being able to identify even and odd numbers are critical for moving ahead to more advanced mathematical topics. Visual concepts and well as hands on concepts will be helpful in my future classroom to aid in mastery of even and odd numbers.
